The City of Montclair is the municipal government of Montclair, California — a San Bernardino County city of about 38,000 in the Pomona Valley, thirty miles east of Los Angeles. Incorporated in 1956 as "Monte Vista" and renamed Montclair two years later after a Post Office naming conflict, it grew from citrus-orchard land into a post-war residential and retail hub. For its size it is remarkably full-service: Montclair runs BOTH its own Police Department and its own Fire Department — unusual among sub-40,000 Southern California cities, most of which contract at least one of the two to the county.
