About Dartmouth College

What is Dartmouth College?

Dartmouth College is a private university in Hanover, New Hampshire. Its About page says it was "Founded in 1769", when a charter "was signed by John Wentworth, the Royal Governor of New Hampshire", and gives its mission as "Dartmouth educates the most promising students and prepares them for a lifetime of learning and of responsible leadership through a faculty dedicated to teaching and the creation of knowledge". Among its core values it lists "Dartmouth fosters lasting bonds among faculty, staff, and students, which encourage a culture of integrity, self-reliance, and collegiality". This profile covers the non-faculty jobs on Dartmouth's own recruiting site, searchjobs.dartmouth.edu, run by its Office of Human Resources.

Where will I work?

The recruiting site held 96 postings on 2026-10-20. This page lists the 52 that are exempt, regular full-time and non-union, because the vacation sentence quoted below covers "Regular salaried staff" and the policy page gives hourly staff a separate arrangement; the temporary, part-time, hourly, fixed-term and union postings are not listed. Each posting states its own "Remote Work Eligibility?": 32 of the 52 read "Onsite only", 16 "Hybrid" and 4 "Remote eligible". By location, 42 are in Hanover, 6 in Lebanon, New Hampshire (five of them on Centerra Parkway) and the other 4 are remote eligible, one of them with "a strong preference for the person to be in the Western region". Titles include "Enterprise Software Engineer III", "Senior Civil Engineer", "Program Manager, Center for Entrepreneurship", "Associate Director Planned Giving", "Head of Research and Learning, Arts & Humanities", "Assistant Coach, Sailing" and "Vice President and Chief Information Officer". 39 of the 52 state a hiring range, from "$52,000" to "$65,000" for a Research Coordinator to "$182,300" to "$227,800" for a Senior Philanthropic Advisor; the rest say "Please inquire" or "Salary Commensurate with Experience". Dartmouth's Flexible Work page says "While most work at Dartmouth is performed on campus, non-faculty employees are able to request a flexible work arrangement".

What is the Dartmouth team like?

The Office of Human Resources runs Meet Up Upper Valley (MUUV), "to provide employees with opportunities to get acquainted and participate in social, recreational, and cultural activities within the Upper Valley", open to employees and their guests. Its Employee Discounts page lists Dartmouth Big Green Athletics, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, the Hood Museum of Art, the Ledyard Canoe Club and the Dartmouth Outing Club, and the D'Perks site carries discounts from local and national merchants. Staff recognition runs through the Lone Pine awards, the Sheila Culbert Distinguished Employee Award and Employee Service Awards.

Work-Life Balance

The Paid Time Off page says "Regular salaried staff are credited with 22 days of vacation per fiscal year (July through June)", and adds that "Unused vacation time is generally not carried over from one year to the next", though a supervisor may request a carry-over of up to five days. The Holidays page lists eight paid holidays in the 2026 calendar year: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (observed on Friday 3 July), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Day After Thanksgiving, the Day Before Christmas Day and Christmas Day. It adds that "all eligible staff may take one paid floating holiday within the calendar year", and that the regularly scheduled workdays of "December 28, 29, 30, 31, 2026" are designated "break days" in a paid winter shutdown, "in addition to their current bank of personal and vacation time". A salaried employee therefore has 22 vacation days and 8 holidays, 30 days, and in a year like 2026 a floating holiday and four break days more, 35. Employees may also receive "up to one day of paid time off in each fiscal year to perform volunteer services through eligible non-profit organizations".

Perks and Benefits

The 401(a) retirement plan gives "employer contributions ranging from 3% to 9% of pay depending on their age", vesting after three years of employment, and staff can add pretax or Roth contributions to a Supplemental Retirement Account, in which "Participants are immediately vested". Dartmouth offers "a choice of three different medical plan options", self-insured and administered by Cigna, with prescription coverage through Express Scripts and preventive vision care through EyeMed; for 2026 its page says Dartmouth's contribution "will continue to cover the majority of the cost". The Tuition Grant makes benefits-eligible employees with a year of continuous regular employment eligible for grants for Dartmouth courses, and the Educational Assistance Program reimburses "100% of the cost of registration and tuition fees, up to a maximum benefit of $2,000 per calendar year". Staff parents receive "an additional eight weeks of pay replacement", "The first six weeks at 100% and an additional two weeks at 60%". Dartmouth "will again contribute up to $4,000 per year toward the Child Care Subsidy for those with children ages 0-5", paid into a Dependent Care FSA. Its wellness benefits are "the two free wellness benefit options", a Lifestyle Spending Account and an annual membership at the Lewinstein Athletic Center, and a mental health exception benefit pays for "80% of your first twelve (12) lifetime, out-of-network, mental health visits".
