About Alan

What is Alan?

Alan describes itself on its careers page as "More than insurance, Alan is a one-stop health partner", with the mission "to empower everyone to live a longer, healthier life". It was founded in 2016 by Jean-Charles Samuelian and Charles Gorintin, who "set out to revolutionize the healthcare industry" and started with a fully digital health insurance. The careers page says Alan now "operates in 4 countries" (France, Belgium, Spain and Canada), and the adverts say it partners with "40K+ companies of all sizes, serving more than 1M+ members" and has "reached €800M+ in ARR". In 2024, according to the careers page, it "raised a further €140M in a series F funding round". Most live adverts describe "our team of 1000+ people" while the careers page says "800+" and a few adverts say "800+ employees" or "nearly 900 Alaners", so treat the headcount as approximate. On 6 November 2026 the Ashby board had 133 roles, including Sales for France (20), Belgium (8) and Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire (4), Engineering (14), Insurance (8), Corporate (8), Operations (7), Data, Product, Design and Associate internships; the 19 clinical, care-expert and customer-care roles are not listed here, nor are 11 more (nine Tanel roles in Dakar and Abidjan, one Prévenir role and one recruitment-day event).

Where will I work?

The largest office is in Paris at 117 Quai de Valmy, with offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Ghent and Brussels, an office in Toronto, and sponsored co-working hubs in many French cities. The careers pages say "We strive for flexibility and usually Alaners can work from anywhere within their employment country" and add that "we tailor remote work to fit different roles, seniority levels, and how teams work best together". The adverts differ: 15 of the 133 list a "Flexible office with hybrid setup" with the Paris HQ or co-working hubs, 16 offer "a full-remote experience with home office equipment sponsorship" and 24 say "we value in-person collaboration". On 6 November 2026 the adverts were mostly in Paris or elsewhere in France (91), followed by Belgium (16), Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire (11), Spain (5), Canada (5), Armenia (3) and Saudi Arabia (2). The Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire roles are at Tanel, which the adverts say Alan acquired in 2026, and are on-site in Dakar or Abidjan; none of them is listed here.

What is the Alan team like?

Alan publishes ten leadership principles, including "Mission is the boss", "Excellence like the best Athletes", "Enlightened despots: distributed ownership with accountability" and being "Radically transparent". The careers page says "We are public first and written first, we structure information and document everything", and the everyday-life page says GitHub "Discussions" and "Issues" are "the cornerstone of our asynchronous, written, transparent and decentralized culture". Every Alaner "has a coach, whom they meet every two weeks to discuss career growth and personal development". The page is open about the pace: "Alan is not always a comfortable place, high performing culture can be demanding as we expect people to push for excellence and to commit to results, not hours: it is not a 9-to-5." Its "Excellence like the best Athletes" principle describes "smart intensity: focus on the highest-impact problems, own the results, move fast, sustainably."

Work-Life Balance

The benefits page lists an "Async and Flexible culture" among the perks "available to all Alaners": "At Alan you're in charge of your own schedule and can adapt it to how you see fit". It continues: "Everything is taking place in writing and we're not bound by set working hours - we completely trust you to achieve your impact at Alan on your schedule." The adverts repeat the point in 48 of the 103 roles listed here (50 of the 133 on the board on 6 November 2026), for example "Flexible vacation policy and flexible working hours. Organize your time as you wish." No core hours or required overlap appear on the careers pages or in any advert. Engineering, IT and a few other roles mention on-call rotations, and some adverts ask for office days (at least 4 a week for two Paris roles, 4-5 a week in Toronto). Time off is a "flexible vacation policy, not an unlimited one", with "guidelines with a minimum and maximum number of days off", and the benefits page publishes no day count. The careers page also says the culture "can be demanding", so the freedom to set your own hours comes with a high bar for results. Glassdoor and Indeed could not be read for a work-life rating.
