About University of Nottingham

What is the University of Nottingham?

The University of Nottingham is a university in Nottingham, in the Midlands. Its About page traces its beginnings to 1881, and its jobs page says it is "founded on a vision that education and research can make a transformative difference to peoples lives". Its main University Park Campus is in Nottingham, with the Jubilee and Sutton Bonington campuses linked by "free regular bus services", and it also has campuses in China and Malaysia. Its careers page lists work "from Research and Teaching to Technical Services, Professional Services (including administrative, professional and managerial roles), and Estates and Facilities".

Where will I work?

On 2026-10-18 the 61 vacancies open to external applicants were split between University Park (21), Jubilee Campus (10), Sutton Bonington (6) and a group labelled "UK Other" (21), and three were at the Ningbo campus in China, which this profile does not cover. The benefits page says "many of our roles offer agile working arrangements with a blended approach of office and home working", and the jobs page adds "Many of our roles offer hybrid working". It also says "All employees have a day-one right to request flexible working". Postings state full-time hours of 36.25 a week.

What is the Nottingham team like?

The jobs page says "We build strong teams and believe in supporting each other" and describes its staff as a "warm, family-like community". The annual Staff Excellence Awards recognise "teaching, research, technical services and professional services" colleagues, the Nottingham Reward Scheme gives vouchers and financial bonuses for nominated work, and Long Service Awards mark 25 and 40 years. The Lord Dearing Award has recognised work on the student experience since 1999. Staff can use a coaching and mentoring pool and Leadership and Management Academy programmes, and take an apprenticeship without any change to their employment terms.

Work-Life Balance

The benefits page says "At job level 1-3, you will be entitled to 27 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and an additional 5 university closure days equating to a total of 40 days", and for job levels 4-7 "30 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus 5 university closure days equating to a total of 43 days". An annual leave purchase scheme lets staff buy up to 5 more days. Employees with 52 consecutive weeks of service may qualify for adoption, maternity and shared parental pay "encompassing 26 weeks on full pay", and two weeks of paternity leave on full pay come after 12 months of service.

Perks and Benefits

Pensions depend on job level: at levels 1-3 the CRSP scheme with Legal and General, "3-8% employee contribution and 6-16% employer contribution", and at levels 4-7 the USS scheme, "6.1% employee contribution plus 14.5% employer contribution". Health support includes discounted voluntary private medical insurance through AXA with 24/7 GP access, a Health4All cash plan, a free confidential Employee Assistance Programme and a University Park health centre with doctors, a dentist and a pharmacy (some services depend on where you live). Staff also get free regular buses between campuses, a Cycle to Work scheme for bikes and accessories "up to £4,000", a salary sacrifice electric car scheme, discounted bus, tram and rail passes, and the bravo platform of discounts and salary extras.
