What is Twilio?
Twilio is a publicly listed customer engagement platform, founded in 2008. Its APIs let developers add messaging, voice, email and authentication to their own products. Twilio describes the wider platform as "built for engagement in the agentic era", connecting "communication channels, customer context, and AI on one flexible platform". Job ads put the company's character more plainly: "At Twilio, we're shaping the future of communications, all from the comfort of our homes."
Where will I work?
Wherever you are. Twilio's careers page is headed "Your impact matters more than your work location" and explains: "In most roles, you're free to work wherever you feel you can do your best. Whether that's at home, a coworking space, or one of our global offices." Its published Open Work framework states plainly: "Almost all Twilions are remote employees." Job ads add the caveat that "while we are a remote-first company, you may be asked to report in person on an ad-hoc basis for team gatherings, functional off-sites or customer meetings." Every open role is listed as remote, across the US, India, Colombia, the UK, Ireland, Canada and beyond.
What is the Twilio team like?
Twilio calls its shared values the "Twilio Magic", its people "Twilions", and everyone a builder. As one employee puts it on the careers site: "I love that everyone here is considered a 'builder,' because the work we do helps other builders — both inside and outside Twilio — be creative and make things that matter." The values read: "We take accountability and see things through... we sweat the details" and "We love hard problems and won't accept a 'can't be done' mentality." Twilio sums the culture up as: "We encourage ownership, celebrate curiosity, and empower employees to make an impact that lasts". Because everyone is distributed, connection is deliberate — managers host virtual team events, every Twilion has a budget to meet their team in person for off-sites, and employee-led ERGs plus local hub events fill the gaps.
Work-Life Balance
Twilio's published time-off line is "Company breaks and generous time off to relax, recharge, and come back ready to build." Job ads use the same word — "generous time-off" — and list "paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave." Twilio does not use the word "unlimited" anywhere on its careers, culture, values or Open Work pages, or in any currently advertised role. The distinctive commitment is to working hours: its Open Work framework describes "a company-wide practice of Focus Fridays—a day dedicated to focusing on meaningful work with few to no meetings", alongside asynchronous and deep-focus work. Employees also get 20 hours of paid volunteer time a year. Twilio publishes no four-day week, 32-hour week or compressed schedule.
