What is the Town of Aylmer?
The Town of Aylmer is the municipal government of a community of roughly 8,000 people in Elgin County, southwestern Ontario, about 45 minutes south of London and a short drive from the north shore of Lake Erie. Aylmer is a single-tier-services town inside a two-tier county structure, so its own staff handle the services residents touch most directly: the clerk's office and council support, finance and taxation, building and planning, by-law enforcement, public works and water, parks and recreation, the Old Town Hall community theatre, fire services, and the East Elgin Community Complex. It is a small organisation where individual roles cover broad ground rather than narrow specialisms.
Where will I work?
On site in Aylmer, Ontario. The Town offices are at 46 Talbot Street West, with public works, recreation and fire staff based at their own facilities around the town. This is in-person municipal work.

A town of 8,000 means the finance clerk, the by-law officer and the CAO all know each other and each other's files, and staff deal with residents directly rather than through a call centre. Work-Life Balance
Aylmer council adopted HR Policy #11.0, "Compressed Work Week", by resolution 118-23 on 5 April 2023, following a trial. The policy applies to full-time administration staff on the 35-hour week, and its Table 1 sets out the change plainly: 35 hours before, 35 hours after — the same weekly hours redistributed across four longer days instead of five.
Staff are assigned to one of two teams, Team A working Monday to Thursday and Team B working Tuesday to Friday, so the Town remains open to the public five days a week while every member of staff gets a third consecutive day off each week. The rosters are assigned by the Town rather than chosen by the employee, which means the compressed week is how the administration actually runs rather than a programme individuals apply to join; a supervisor can direct an exception where operational needs demand it.
Be clear about what this is: a genuine, council-approved four-day working week for administration staff, but a compressed one. Weekly hours do not fall — each working day is longer. Public works and recreation staff, whose schedules follow service and facility hours, are not on the administration roster.
