About Tahirih Justice Center
What is the Tahirih Justice Center?
The Tahirih Justice Center calls itself "a national, nonprofit organization that serves women, girls, and all immigrant survivors of gender-based violence." Its About page says "Our whole-person approach provides each survivor with free legal support and social services to secure their rights and build stable lives", and its mission is "to create a world in which all people share equal rights and live in safety and with dignity." It combines "free legal services and social services case management with bridge-building policy advocacy and research-based training and education". It was founded in 1997, describes itself as "a secular organization founded on the principles of the Baha’i faith", and takes its name from Tahirih, born in 1814 and remembered as a poet and as someone who could "organize and inspire women to reject their oppressed status".
Where will I work?
Its careers page says its work "is fueled by committed staff in Atlanta, Baltimore, Greater DC, Houston, and the San Francisco Bay Area", and its About page dates the offices: Greater DC 1997, Houston 2009, Baltimore 2010, the San Francisco Bay Area 2016 and Atlanta 2018. Its National and Greater DC offices are on Arlington Boulevard in Falls Church, Virginia. The careers page lists a "Hybrid work environment" and "Opportunities for alternative work schedules", and its Major Gifts Officer posting says "time in the office is determined between the supervisor and supervisee based on the role responsibilities and team needs". That posting asks for someone who lives within commuting distance of its Falls Church, Houston or San Bruno office, and its Legal Advocate posting sits in Baltimore.
What is the Tahirih team like?
Its careers page asks "Are you ready to join a team of diverse, accomplished, and driven professionals who are passionate about ending violence against women and girls?" and says "we care deeply about each team member’s professional development and growth". Its staff benefits include "In-house training programs and staff enrichment retreats", "360 annual performance reviews" and "A work environment supportive of caregivers". Its postings put the pay in the advert: $60,000 - $66,000 for the Legal Advocate and $90,000 - $112,000 for the Major Gifts Officer, with a $12,000 geographic differential for the California location.
Work-Life Balance
Its careers page lists "Flexible self-managed paid time off as well as time off for 11 holidays, Summer Fridays (early Friday closure in July and August) and the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day". The Major Gifts Officer posting repeats the Fridays as "summer Fridays (1 pm closure in July & August)" and lists "flexible work schedules (37.5 hour work week)".
