About SmugMug + Flickr

What is SmugMug + Flickr?

SmugMug is the independent, family-run photography company that has run the SmugMug photo-hosting and print platform since 2002 — and since 2018 has also owned and operated Flickr, one of the internet's original and best-loved photo communities, home to tens of billions of photos and the Flickr Commons cultural archive. Together the two brands serve everyone from working professional photographers selling prints to the world's largest photography community. The two products are deliberately complementary: SmugMug is where working photographers host, share and sell their work with full control over presentation and pricing, while Flickr remains the community — groups, galleries and the Commons programme that hosts public photography archives from institutions like the Library of Congress. Engineers and product people here work on real photo infrastructure at scale: storage, search and community systems serving one of the web's largest image corpora.

Where will I work?

At home: job adverts describe "A fully remote work environment (+ a coworking space reimbursement if you prefer)", and the careers page confirms "fully remote employment options" with US-remote roles (some state-restricted). The Mountain View, California headquarters remains for those who want a desk.

What is the SmugMug + Flickr team like?

Around 150-170 people across product, engineering, support, marketing and trust & safety, working on two of photography's most recognisable products. Glassdoor reviewers rate the company 4.4 overall with work-life balance at 4.6, and it holds a current Great Place To Work certification.

Work-Life Balance

The headline, verbatim from all three current job descriptions across both hiring boards: a "4 day work week" — one advert calls it "An experimental 4-day work week", and we disclose both that experimental status and that the company does not publish the weekly hours (so we list it conservatively as a compressed week rather than a reduced one). On top of the four-day pattern sits "Unlimited vacation: We firmly believe in the importance of charging our batteries" (careers page) and "Flexible Time Off (FTO)" in the adverts.

Perks and Benefits

  • "4 day work week" — verbatim in every current advert (experimental status disclosed; hours unpublished)
  • "Unlimited vacation" (careers page) / "Flexible Time Off (FTO)" (adverts)
  • "Health, dental, vision insurance — 100% premium coverage for employee and dependents"
  • "HSA contributions covering 90%+ of annual deductible" and "401(k) with company match and immediate vesting"
  • "Remote work stipends (internet, fitness, coworking space)" and a company-sponsored phone plan
  • "Company-sponsored therapy and coaching"
