About Skylight
What is Skylight?
Skylight describes itself in its postings as "a technology startup building the OS of the family". It makes Skylight Frame, a digital photo frame, and Skylight Calendar, a smart family calendar, and its latest launches are Calendar 2 and Skylight Buddy. The careers page says "We're profitable and growing like a weed", the site banner says its products are "loved by over 1 million families", and the postings say it has "scaled from a school project to over $300M in annual revenue while being completely bootstrapped." The About page tells the founding story: the team "first came together as students at Harvard Business School", all living far from their families, and built a photo frame that would "live in their home."
Where will I work?
The careers page says Skylight is "based out of San Francisco and Los Angeles" and lists "Ability to work remotely" as a benefit. In practice most roles are remote in the US: the Workable board holds 13 listings across nine roles, 12 listed as remote (the National Retail Sales Coordinator is listed for Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis and Seattle as well as nationally) and one, a Principal Product Manager, requires that "You live in San Francisco, or are willing to relocate to San Francisco." The National Sales Account Manager role is "Remote in the United States; Hybrid in LA". The postings add "We hire across the U.S., but for legal reasons, we have to list NY and CO separately."
What is the Skylight team like?
The careers page says "We believe in: Autonomy, Care, and Rigor" and calls the culture "Fun and collaborative", and every posting lists "Tremendous autonomy to set the direction of your work." The roles are senior and independent: the Director of Growth Marketing is "a senior individual contributor role" where "There's no playbook to follow; you'll be writing it." The founders are described as "former venture capitalists and serial entrepreneurs." The company says it is "on our way to building a $1B+ business".
Work-Life Balance
Every listing says "Unlimited PTO", and each also lists "Company holidays on the first Friday of every month", which the postings word as excluding November and December, and in most cases January too. That works out as nine or ten extra company days off a year, on top of whatever time off you take. The listings state no minimum for the unlimited PTO, so ask how much time people actually take. There is also a home-office budget and a monthly wellness stipend.
