About Prefect
What is Prefect?
Prefect is the workflow-orchestration company behind one of the most widely used open-source tools in modern data engineering. Its Python framework lets data teams build, schedule, observe and retry the pipelines that move and transform data — the unglamorous machinery every ML model and dashboard depends on — and Prefect Cloud adds the managed control plane on top. Founded in 2018 by Jeremiah Lowin and backed by ~$46M through Series B (investors include Positive Sum and Tiger Global), Prefect has a community of tens of thousands of data engineers and counts major enterprises among its customers. The open-source gravity is real hiring leverage: many candidates arrive already knowing the product from work, and engineers ship features the community sees the same week. Prefect 3 and its serverless offering pushed the platform toward event-driven workflows, keeping the engineering surface genuinely interesting — schedulers, distributed state, observability — rather than CRUD.
Where will I work?
From wherever you work best: Prefect is fully distributed — every current opening is listed simply as "Remote" — and its benefits block leads with "Remote-first team with flexible-first culture", backed by an "$800 remote work stipend" for your setup.
What is the Prefect team like?
Around 100 people across engineering, product, growth and go-to-market, with a strong open-source culture: much of the team's work happens in public, in the Prefect repo and community Slack. Glassdoor reviewers rate work-life balance 3.8, with the honest note that one review dissents about always-on tendencies — not a pattern across the 45-review sample.
Work-Life Balance
"Unlimited PTO" appears verbatim in seven of Prefect's eight live job descriptions, across every department — the company-wide policy, sitting alongside a flexible-first culture that treats hours as yours to arrange.
