What is Power TakeOff?
Power TakeOff builds software and runs energy-efficiency programmes for utilities, specialising in energy efficiency and demand-side management. Two engineers founded it in 2007 to build software that let business customers see their own energy data, developed in partnership with Xcel Energy. Its flagship programme, Virtual Commissioning (VCx), "virtually commissions" commercial and public institutional buildings — small and medium businesses included — through remote analysis of smart-meter data, guiding them to "simple, no-cost operational fixes that deliver an average annual energy reduction of 15% per participant". Utilities fund the programme, so customers pay nothing, and Power TakeOff is paid for verified savings. VCx grew from 11 utilities in 2020 to 35 in 2026. The company's Utility Intelligence Platform ingests more than 2.5 million meters a day, and in 2025 it helped partners achieve 115 GWh of claimable savings and more than $20 million in avoided customer costs. Growth-equity investor Lime Rock New Energy acquired a controlling interest from the founding shareholders in 2023.
Where will I work?
From home. "Power TakeOff is a 100% virtual company with no physical office location," its postings say. It does have hubs around Denver, Colorado and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, where team members can "connect in person from time to time", and its listed address is in Boulder, Colorado. Roles are open in the United States, Canada or both — the current Energy Efficiency Engineer post can be filled in either country — and travel is minimal, with the company covering accommodation and travel costs for any trips it asks you to make.
What is the Power TakeOff team like?
A team of around 170 engineers, energy advisors, energy-management coaches and client success managers, who call themselves "a virtual workplace committed to connection". Three values guide it: Curious ("We pursue continuous learning and challenge the status quo"), Collaborative ("We achieve more when we are united in purpose and committed to shared success") and Continuously Impactful. Postings publish salary ranges: $105,000–$120,000 plus a performance bonus for a Client Success Manager III, and $80,000–$100,000 (CAD 93,800–118,200) for an Energy Efficiency Engineer I. The company says it keeps "broad salary ranges" to account for experience and market conditions.
Work-Life Balance
"At Power TakeOff, we take pride in being among the top 2% of employers for paid time off," the careers page says: new employees start with 41 days of paid time off, rising to 46 after the first year. Part of that is Summer "Friyays" — "From June through August, we take each 2nd and 4th Friday off", about six long weekends a summer — which both current postings repeat. The rest is 15 vacation days (20 after the first year), seven paid wellbeing days, at least nine paid holidays and an all-company winter break from December 25 to January 1. Long-serving staff get an extra 10 days of paid sabbatical every five years, and parents get paid leave with flexible return-to-work arrangements.
