What is Plaid?
Plaid is a financial-technology infrastructure company, founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco. Its stated mission is to "unlock financial freedom for everyone": "Plaid is focused on democratizing financial services through technology. We build beautiful consumer experiences, developer-friendly infrastructure, and intelligent tools that give everyone the ability to create amazing products that solve big problems." In practice, Plaid lets people securely connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they choose. Its job ads describe a network covering "12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe", working "with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks". Products span account connection and identity, payments, fraud and risk, credit underwriting and open-finance tooling.
Where will I work?
Plaid is office-anchored rather than distributed. Its careers site advertises "Vibrant offices in SF, NYC, and Raleigh-Durham—with catered meals, happy hours, and clubs to keep you connected", and its job board lets you filter by San Francisco HQ, New York City Office, Seattle Office, Raleigh Office, London Office and Remote United States. The overwhelming majority of open roles are tagged Hybrid on that board, with only a handful of onsite or remote-US postings — so expect a job built around one of those offices. Job ads add that the company is "headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam".
What is the Plaid team like?
Late-stage but still fast-moving, by its own account. One employee quoted on the careers site puts it this way: "We are a late-stage company, but we still operate like a start-up. If someone has a really cool idea and they want to break something, we can turn it off tomorrow, build something, and ship it within a few days." Another offers: "Three words I would use to describe Plaid are: autonomy, supportive, and high impact." Plaid frames hiring around the mission, saying it is "building a platform we believe in" alongside "a diverse team who want to have an impact, grow their careers, and support each other in the process". It also runs a software engineering internship where you "gain hands-on experience, build lasting connections, and get an inside look at what it's like to be part of a company shaping the future of finance."
Work-Life Balance
Plaid does not publish a time-off policy. There is no mention of holiday, vacation, PTO or leave allowance on its careers site or in any currently advertised role, so nothing can be said here about how much time off you would get — worth asking early. What Plaid does publish, under the heading "Benefits that you actually want", is practical support around life outside work: "Competitive pay, comprehensive health benefits, and support for fertility, mental health, and parental leave", and "Lifestyle perks including home office stipends, daycare support, and commuting benefits like CitiBike and Lyft." Plaid publishes no four-day week, 32-hour week or compressed schedule.
