What is The New York Climate Exchange?
The New York Climate Exchange is "a nonprofit that unlocks climate solutions by activating a unique partner model and climate campus—coming to Governors Island." In April 2023, after "a two-year global competition", The Trust for Governors Island and the New York City Mayor's Office announced that the Exchange, "a new non-profit consortium led by Stony Brook University", would develop a climate campus on the island "for research, education, and jobs." It draws on 48 partners from academia, business and community organizations, among them CUNY, NYU, IBM, Moody's and the American Museum of Natural History. Its work covers three areas. In climate data, it makes data "more useful across sectors, to improve public health, disaster preparedness, environmental regulation, climate adaptation, business forecasting, and more". It also works on urban resilience, and in climate finance it is working to create "the world's leading hub" for financing strategies "to significantly scale investment in climate action." The campus, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will include "New York City's first large-scale mass timber building" and a "grand convening hall" seating 650, and it is "coming to Governors Island in 2029".
Where will I work?
Until the campus opens, the Exchange works from 10 South Street in New York. Its staff roles are hybrid, with postings giving "Location: New York City (Hybrid)", and applicants "must be able to work in the United States as The Exchange does not yet have visa-sponsoring capabilities." In September 2026 its openings are a chief advancement officer ($290,000 to $310,000), a climate data scientist ($165,000 to $210,000) and a senior executive assistant to the CEO ($130,000 to $155,000).
What is The Exchange team like?
Its staff page lists 21 people, including a chief climate scientist, a director of data innovation and teams for community initiatives, capital projects, partnerships and fundraising. Staff work to the "New York Climate Exchange Staff Core Competencies", which include "Initiates collaboration across boundaries and broadly across The Exchange, partner organizations, and other relevant institutions", "Recognizes the value of diverse perspectives and lived experiences" and "Commits to a decision and acts once it has been reached." Beyond research, the Exchange plans a fellows program for graduate students and job training "to help develop the green workforce", and it hosts events during Climate Week NYC.
Work-Life Balance
Two of the Exchange's three staff postings in September 2026 list Summer Fridays among the benefits, alongside paid time off and wellness programs. Neither says which months they run or how long the Friday is. Roles are hybrid in New York City, and the senior executive assistant role asks for "periodic evening and weekend availability".
