About METR
What is METR?
METR (Model Evaluation & Threat Research) is an independent research nonprofit that scientifically measures whether and when frontier AI systems could pose catastrophic risks. It develops evaluation methodologies for autonomous AI capabilities, studies how models might evade monitoring, and publishes risk assessments — working with leading AI labs and policymakers as a trusted third party.
Spun out as an independent organisation in 2022 (originally incubated as ARC Evals), METR is based in Berkeley, California.

METR is based in Berkeley, CA — research collaboration is largely in person, with flexibility depending on the role.
What is the METR team like?
A ~54-person team of researchers and engineers from top AI labs and academia. Compensation is competitive with Bay Area tech roles (excluding equity), and the hiring bar is famously high — but they explicitly encourage applicants who don't seem like the "perfect fit" to apply anyway.
