About Metabase

What is Metabase?

Metabase is an open-source business intelligence platform. In the company's own words it is "bringing data tools with the elegance and simplicity of consumer products to the crufty world of enterprise business intelligence", offering "an opinionated open source starting point for how companies should measure, analyze and share their data" plus a suite of tools for the complexity that arrives as a company grows. Its postings say the product is "used by tens of thousands of companies". Metabase is venture funded and says it "raised a $30M Series B to take our approach to the next level for years to come". It is candid about its engineering philosophy: "We're relentlessly user-focused and believe in building long-term value, not short-term hacks."

Where will I work?

Wherever you like. Metabase describes itself as "a global team (50% outside the US), fully distributed (from Thailand to California)". Every open role on its job board is listed as "Full-time (remote)" and advertised against a region rather than an address: Global Remote, Remote-US, Remote-EU and Remote-North & South America. Some roles specify a working-hours band in place of a location, for example "Candidates who operate in UTC-3 -- UTC-8". The careers page makes the point at its own expense, listing among the things you will get: "Amazing views from our beautiful downtown San Francisco office Zoom channel."

What is the Metabase team like?

Small, technical and deliberately unhurried. "We're small, engineering-led, and you'll be joining at a pivotal time in the company," says the careers page. The culture note repeated across postings describes colleagues who "get things done asynchronously, with plenty of uninterrupted time, supporting each other to do the best work of our careers". Hiring spans Engineering, Product and Design, Marketing and Growth, Sales, Operations and Success Engineering — a support function Metabase treats as an engineering discipline in its own right. The company says it offers "autonomy, and an environment that fosters growth, learning, and development", and wants "folks who care about building a great product and team".

Work-Life Balance

Metabase's stated arrangement is async-first and self-directed. Its Success Engineering postings put it plainly: "We operate as a fully remote, async team. Work where and when you're most productive - we trust you to get your work done. Meetings are rare, efficient, and your time is respected." On scheduling, the company offers "flexibility (define your own schedule and work from wherever you want)". On leave, its benefits summary states "flexible and unlimited paid time off including sick time". One caveat worth reading carefully: the medical, dental, vision and 401(k) provisions below are described specifically as a "comprehensive US benefits package", and Metabase does not publish the equivalent package for employees outside the US.
