About Kiva
What is Kiva?
Kiva, legally Kiva Microfunds, is a San Francisco nonprofit that lets people lend small amounts to borrowers around the world. Its about page states the mission as "Kiva expands financial access to help underserved communities thrive." and calls the organisation "an international nonprofit". The page footer adds that Kiva is "a 501(c)3 U.S. nonprofit fueled by passionate people. Founded in 2005, and based in San Francisco, with offices in Bangkok, Nairobi, Portland and staff around the globe." Wikipedia dates the founding to October 2005 and credits Matt Flannery and Jessica Jackley. The finances page explains the structure: Kiva Microfunds covers the operating costs, a separate entity holds the funds that belong to Kiva users, and the wholly-owned subsidiary Kiva Capital Management manages impact-first private investment funds. The adverts read on 6 November 2026 say Kiva is "supported by over 700 volunteers and 130+ full time employees dispersed around the world", and its Form 990 for the tax year ending 30 June 2025 reports 137 individuals employed in calendar year 2024 and 460 volunteers.
Where will I work?
The six salaried adverts are all work-from-home positions: each says "A work-from-home position" and requires the final candidate to be authorised to work in the named country or to live in a listed US state. The careers page says "We hire the best people we can find, wherever they happen to be", but the adverts narrow that. The Bogota advert says "we can only consider applicants with authorization to work in Colombia on a permanent, full-time basis", the Nairobi and Bangkok adverts use the same permanent, full-time wording for Kenya and Thailand, and the three US adverts say Kiva is "only able to hire home employees residing in the following states" (22 states in two adverts, 21 in the third). On 6 November 2026 the Greenhouse board held nine adverts: Manager, Strategic Partnerships; Principal Product Manager; and Senior Manager, Public Relations (all US remote), Capacity Building Manager in Bogota, Financial Operations & Accounting Administrator in Nairobi, Investment Associate in Bangkok, plus two US remote internships and a volunteer ambassador waitlist. This profile counts the six salaried adverts that state unlimited PTO: Colombia 1, Kenya 1, Thailand 1 and the United States 3. The adverts name team hubs in San Francisco, Nairobi, Bogota and Bangkok.
What is the Kiva team like?
The adverts describe a mission-driven, globally spread team and list values such as "Impact first", "Extreme ownership" and "Be curious and bold". The Impact Investments advert says its team includes "staff based in the US, Colombia, Kenya, and Thailand". Roles range from the Bangkok Investment Associate, where "This is an early career opportunity", to a Principal Product Manager who is asked for "8-10 years of experience in product management roles". The Bogota advert looks for someone who will "thrive on high levels of autonomy", and the Nairobi advert describes a "global time-zone, remote-first workplace" where the role partners with colleagues across five departments. The careers page adds that "Everyone at Kiva gets to travel to one of the countries we work in." The three other live adverts are volunteer or internship placements rather than staff roles: two six-month part-time internships with an $800 monthly stipend and an unpaid ambassador role of about two hours a week.
Work-Life Balance
The careers page reads "Life happens. So do vacations. Take time off for both. All salaried employees get unlimited PTO." Each salaried advert repeats it inside the benefits sentence: "A comprehensive, industry-leading benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, parental leave, professional development, and unlimited PTO. Some of these benefits have eligibility requirements." (the US adverts add 401k matching). No number of days or public-holiday terms are stated. Two caveats apply. The careers page limits the policy to salaried employees, which excludes the stipend-only internships, and its footnote says "Benefits listed above may differ for roles based outside the US." The three non-US adverts still list unlimited PTO and describe a permanent, full-time role. The careers page footer is dated 2019, so its figures may be older than the 2026 adverts. No flexible-hours or core-hours wording appears; the Bangkok advert asks for "Flexibility and willingness to maintain a dynamic schedule in order to work across varying time zones", which is a requirement on the candidate. Glassdoor blocked the research request on 6 November 2026, so no review score or long-hours check was made.
