About iCivics

What is iCivics?

iCivics is a nonpartisan nonprofit "dedicated to advancing civic learning by providing educators and students with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to embrace and engage in our civic life together." Founded in 2009 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it makes free educational games, interactive resources and project-based curricula that teach "fundamental principles of government, law, and civic responsibility". Its first game, Do I Have a Right?, has students run a law firm and match clients with the right lawyer; others let them control all three branches of government, argue a real Supreme Court case or run a campaign for president. Today, it says, "up to 145,000 teachers and 9 million students in all 50 states" use its resources.

Its 2025–2030 strategic plan has four pillars: innovating in education, informing policy at the state and national levels, inspiring engagement in civic learning, and illustrating impact with evidence. The organization has received a MacArthur Award for Creative & Effective Institutions, and in 2026 Do I Have a Right? won a GEE! Award.

Where will I work?

At home. iCivics' office is on Cambridge Street in Cambridge, but its careers page offers the "Ability to work from anywhere", and its posting says the role "is remote and working from a home office; we welcome candidates from anywhere in the United States with final work location subject to approval", with travel of "less than 10%". The team meets in person at an annual staff retreat. In October 2026 the careers page lists three remote, full-time roles: an associate director of product marketing, a platform product manager and a chief communications and marketing officer. The product marketing salary "starts at $90,000".

What is the iCivics team like?

"Our talented team does it all, from designing high-quality educational resources to advocating for stronger support of civic education to engaging our educator network," the careers page says. More than half of the team are former educators, so its resources are "created by teachers, for teachers", and 88% of staff say iCivics is a great place to work. It describes its people as committed, goal-oriented, service-minded, collaborative and innovative. Applications are read by a person: "A human will review applications on a rolling basis – we do not use AI to screen our applications."

Work-Life Balance

Paid time off at iCivics "includes holidays, annual winter closure, and half-day summer Fridays", according to the careers page. Its posting describes the package as "5 weeks PTO + Winter Break + Summer Fridays + a guaranteed 4-day July 4th weekend", alongside "100% remote (US) with flexible hours to fit your life" and "12 weeks of 100% paid parental leave". Neither source says which weeks the summer Fridays run.
