About HLM Architects
What is HLM Architects?
HLM Architects is a 180-strong UK + Ireland architecture practice founded in 1964. The practice operates across Belfast, Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, London and Sheffield (HQ) plus a new studio recently opened. Multi-sector portfolio across education, emergency services, hospitality, residential, healthcare and masterplanning.
Where will I work?
Seven studios across the UK and Ireland: Belfast, Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Sheffield, and a recent additional UK studio. Roles span project architects, technologists, landscape architects, sector leads (Education, Healthcare, Hospitality, Residential, Emergency Services) plus support roles. Hybrid working typical of UK architectural practices.
What is the HLM team like?
~320 architects, designers, technologists and support staff across the 7 studios (per Apollo data; ~180 design professionals per their own descriptions). Mid-sized practice with award-winning project portfolio.
Work-Life Balance
HLM operates a 9-day fortnight rolled out over 2-3 years. Initial pilot in a couple of studios for a year, then rolled out across the whole business. From their own published article: "We introduced our nine-day fortnight, which involves staff working a little longer over a nine-day period and not working on the tenth day."
The scheme is optional but widely adopted: initial uptake was one in five staff; more recent data shows 60% of the team taking the option to work the 9-day fortnight. Hybrid working is also standard practice.
