About Food Bank For New York City
What is Food Bank For New York City?
Food Bank For New York City is the city's largest hunger-relief organization. It began in 1983, when "New York City was in crisis" and a small group of New Yorkers set out "to build the city's first food bank", leasing a distribution center in the Hunts Point Cooperative Market big enough to serve all five boroughs. "What began with 600,000 pounds of food and 129 agencies has grown into a citywide network of nearly 800 community partners across all five boroughs", and it now moves "millions of pounds of food daily". Its mission: "We exist to empower every New Yorker to achieve food security—providing fresh food, SNAP assistance, and nutrition education for lasting stability."
Beyond supplying pantries and soup kitchens, it runs a Community Kitchen in West Harlem serving 100,000 meals a month, a Campus Pantry program bringing groceries to schools, mobile pantries, SNAP and tax-filing help, nutrition education and disaster relief. Since 2022 it has run its own fleet of more than 40 trucks, and in 2023 it doubled the cooler space at its 90,000-square-foot Hunts Point warehouse.
Where will I work?
In the Bronx and Harlem. The administrative office shares the Hunts Point distribution center at 355 Food Center Drive in the Bronx, and the Community Kitchen is on West 116th Street. Some office roles are hybrid: the philanthropy coordinator role is "hybrid with in-person requirements on site at the Community Kitchen in Harlem and/or our warehouse in the Bronx as needed", and fundraising and public-affairs roles include some evening and weekend events. In October 2026 its office openings include a benefits network engagement coordinator, a community partner program coordinator ($53,000–$57,000), philanthropy and public affairs coordinators ($60,000–$65,000) and a manager of leadership giving ($80,000–$87,000). On 4dayweek.io we list its office roles, not its driver and warehouse jobs.
What is the Food Bank team like?
"Whether you're on the ground or behind the scenes, you help keep New York City fed," the careers page says, inviting people to "Join a team as diverse as our city, that moves fast, works hard, cares deeply, and always puts people first—our neighbors and each other." Its values are to always put people first, make an impact, do the right thing, win together, keep it real, stay curious and serve with heart, and it calls its workplace a "People-First Culture".
