About City of Vallejo

What is the City of Vallejo?

The City of Vallejo is the municipal government of Vallejo, California — a Solano County waterfront city of about 126,000, the second-largest city in the North Bay, incorporated in 1868 on General Mariano Vallejo's Rancho Suscol. It was twice the capital of California (1852 and 1853), and for 140+ years its economy was defined by the Mare Island Naval Shipyard — the first US naval shipyard on the Pacific coast (1854-1996), now a mixed-use redevelopment district. Today the San Francisco Bay Ferry links downtown Vallejo to SF, and the city hosts Cal Poly Maritime Academy, Touro University California and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. Its 2008 Chapter 9 filing — then the largest by any California city — and 2011 exit shaped a leaner, rebuilt city government of around 600 staff.

Where will I work?

Vallejo City Hall at 555 Santa Clara Street, on the waterfront civic center. The 9/80 is structural: the city's own homepage reads "REGULAR CITY HALL HOURS Monday - Thursday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, and every other Friday during the same hours" — with the open-Friday dates published.

What is the City of Vallejo team like?

Around 598 staff across public works, planning, finance, economic development and safety support. Recent civilian postings include a Traffic Engineer, an Economic Development Director and a Finance Director — one of the strongest professional slates in this cohort. We list the city's civilian professional roles; sworn positions run separate rosters and are excluded from our feed.
