What is the City of Palo Alto?
The City of Palo Alto is the municipal government of Palo Alto, California — the charter city of about 68,600 at the heart of Silicon Valley, incorporated in 1894 and named after the ancient coastal redwood El Palo Alto. It is one of the few full-service cities in California: unusually, Palo Alto owns and operates ALL of its own utilities — electric, gas, water, wastewater and fiber — which makes its roughly 1,000-strong workforce far more technical than a typical city of its size, spanning utility engineers, resource planners, technologists and analysts alongside planning, library, community services and public safety support.
