About Block
What is Block?
Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ; formerly Square, Inc.) is a public technology and financial-services company founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey. The company is structured around economic empowerment — payments, banking-as-a-service, music streaming and decentralized financial tools — operated through five distinct businesses: Cash App, Square (seller-focused payments + commerce), TIDAL, TBD (decentralized identity / Bitcoin), and Spiral (Bitcoin open-source).
Where will I work?
Block operates from offices in Oakland (HQ), San Francisco, Atlanta, St. Louis, New York and other US + international locations, plus remote roles across multiple US states. The Tuesday No Meeting Day applies company-wide.
What is the team like?
Around 12,000 — 17,000 employees (Block has reduced headcount via layoffs in March 2025) across product, engineering, design, finance, ops, customer experience and the five business lines listed above.
Work-Life Balance
Block's headline work-life perk (since March 2024) is Tuesdays as a company-wide No Meeting Day, announced by CEO Jack Dorsey. From Kristen Anderson, Block's Cash App Product Lead, on the announcement: "So @jack made Tuesdays a 'No Meeting Day' across Block, and I am unbelievably pumped... Less talk about the work. More work." The policy is positioned to give "makers" (engineers, designers, etc.) a protected day for deep work without internal-meeting fragmentation.
