What is Biogen?

Biogen is one of the world's oldest independent biotech companies, founded in 1978 in Geneva and now headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company pioneered modern biotech, with annual revenue of ~$10B and a market cap of ~$26B (NASDAQ: BIIB). Biogen specialises in neuroscience — multiple sclerosis (Tysabri, Tecfidera), spinal muscular atrophy (Spinraza), Alzheimer's disease (Leqembi via partnership with Eisai), and rare neurological disorders. The company also has a presence in biosimilars and immunology.

Biogen's mission is "Caring deeply, working fearlessly to change patients' lives." The company has a long history of scientific firsts — the first interferon beta therapy for MS, the first antisense oligonucleotide for SMA, and ongoing pipeline work in tauopathies and neurodegeneration.

Where will I work?

Biogen's primary US sites are Cambridge, MA (HQ + R&D), Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC (manufacturing + commercial), and Weston, MA. Office-based roles support hybrid arrangements; lab and manufacturing roles are largely on-site. The Cambridge campus is one of the most established biotech sites in Kendall Square.

What is the Biogen team like?

With ~7,700 employees globally, Biogen blends scientific rigour with a smaller, more focused culture than the pharma giants. Long career arcs are common, with sabbaticals available after 6 years of service. The company has been through significant restructuring in recent years following changes in the Alzheimer's portfolio, but its core neuroscience mission and benefits structure remain strong.

Biogen offers genuinely generous time off in the US. Their own recruiting boilerplate (verified across 8+ live job listings) reads: "a minimum of 15 days of paid vacation and an additional end-of-year shutdown time off (Dec 26-Dec 31), plus up to 12 company paid holidays and 3 paid days off for Personal Significance." The year-end shutdown is explicitly additional to the 12 holidays. Total is approximately ~34 paid days off per year at hire (sick days are tracked separately on top of this).
