What is Big Human?
Big Human is a digital product studio based in the New York area and established in 2010 — "a technology, design, and branding company", in its own words, that develops "digital products and services for businesses, non-profits, and our own startups". It describes itself as "part client-services, part internal lab": it designs and builds websites, apps and brands for clients, and incubates its own ideas. HQ Trivia and Vine, along with Subdial, its first-responder alternatives app, were "all born out of the Big Human office", and it has worked for brands including Rockefeller Center, Gemini, Netflix and Whistle. Since 2010, it says, it has produced 262 websites, 80 applications and 50 brands for 247 clients. Its services run from strategy and branding to product design, development and growth marketing, with most work in fintech, e-commerce, travel, startups, social media, blockchain and healthcare. The team has been recognised by TIME, the Webby Awards and the Shorty Awards, among others.
Where will I work?
From home. "Although we're technically based in the New York metropolitan area, we work remotely (and get together often)," says Big Human's about page. The careers page puts it this way: "We've fully embraced remote work — but we do get together for in-person working days, holiday parties, happy hours, and company-wide retreats." Both current openings are "fully remote, with strong preference for someone based in the Tri-State area (or who can easily travel to NYC for coworking days and team gatherings)", and the perks list includes bi-monthly coworking days. The about page lists New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago as locations. Staff get an internet credit and a stipend to upgrade their home office.
What is the Big Human team like?
Small and mixed: the homepage describes "the 35-person Big Human team" of 12 designers, 15 engineers and 8 strategists. The careers page speaks of "a diverse culture of autonomy, collaboration, and support", and the company lists five values. "We're supportive. We do everything we can to foster a workplace that caters to creativity, mental wellness, and a healthy work-life balance." It is also grounded ("We think big, but remain realistic and keep our egos in check"), passionate, forward-thinking and accountable: "While we may function as individuals, we execute as a team." The two engineering roles open now, a tech lead and a senior full-stack engineer, work in React, Next.js and TypeScript with Supabase, Stripe and Vercel. Big Human embraces "AI-assisted development as part of how we work", expecting engineers to use tools such as Cursor and Claude Code and to "take full responsibility for everything that goes into production". When the team isn't on Zoom or Slack, the careers page says, "find us hiking in upstate New York, enjoying a summer Friday in Brooklyn, or competing to see who can design the best tie-dye t-shirt."
Work-Life Balance
Big Human offers Summer Fridays. They appear on the perks list of its careers page and of both current job postings, though the company doesn't publish the details, such as which months they run or whether Fridays are full or half days off. "We believe work is important, but so is taking care of yourself, having time to connect with your coworkers, and recharging away from the computer screen," the careers page says. Alongside Summer Fridays come 14 paid holidays and what it calls a "generous amount of vacation time", plus 10 to 16 weeks of paid parental leave. Big Human doesn't publish weekly hours.
