About AWE
What is AWE?
AWE — the Atomic Weapons Establishment — is the British Crown-owned organisation responsible for designing, manufacturing, and maintaining the warheads for the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent. More than 9,000 people work at AWE in support of national security across science, engineering, manufacturing, security, and business services functions. The organisation is in an especially active phase: it is "going through a significant programme to design and produce Astraea, the replacement warhead for the UK's continuous at sea deterrent, and managing hugely important infrastructure projects that will deliver cutting-edge facilities across a unique estate spanning over 1,000 acres."
AWE has been recognised in multiple Best Companies to Work For categories, based on direct employee feedback.
Where will I work?
AWE operates a secure 1,000+ acre estate at Aldermaston, Berkshire, in the English countryside. Most roles are site-based given the nature of the work; some roles offer the opportunity to work off-site or from home, and flexible working arrangements can be discussed where compatible with operational requirements. The site closes every other Friday under the 9-day fortnight pattern (see Work-Life Balance below).
What is the AWE team like?
AWE's workforce spans science (nuclear physics, materials science, computational science), engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, systems), manufacturing (precision production, quality assurance), and business services (HR, finance, procurement, security, IT). The organisation places exceptional emphasis on professional development, including funding for annual professional-body membership, support to gain relevant qualifications, and four Early Careers programmes: Apprenticeships, the EVOLVE graduate programme, an Undergraduate scheme, and the Defence STEM Undergraduate Sponsorship (DSUS) Scheme.
All candidates must be British citizens and have resided in the UK for the past 5 years (10 for Developed Vetting). Pre-employment includes BPSS (Sterling) followed by SC or DV clearance (UKSV) — clearance can take several months.
Work-Life Balance
AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight — "our sites close every other Friday." Full-time hours are distributed across a 2-weekly cycle: Week 1 = Monday to Friday, 41 hours; Week 2 = Monday to Thursday, 33 hours (no Friday). Because the schedule is irregular, annual leave is calculated in hours: 270 hours per year, inclusive of UK Bank Holidays. Salaries are benchmarked annually against industry standards by an independent provider, and pay reviews are performance-related.
