This Opportunity
At Smith + Andersen the BIM Technician II role is an advanced, discipline-specific production role responsible for developing and coordinating complex models across project phases with increased independence and technical judgment. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and coordinating complex building information models across multiple project phases. Working closely with project team members, you will apply your technical expertise and judgment while supporting the continuous improvement of modeling practices and delivery standards. What You’ll Do
- Develop, manage, and maintain complex, discipline-specific BIM models (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.) using Autodesk Revit across all project stages.
- Translate design intent, engineering calculations, and detailed mark-ups into fully coordinated, constructible BIM models and drawing outputs.
- Lead model production for assigned projects or work packages, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and deliverable requirements.
- Review and validate model content produced by Junior BIM Technicians for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project standards.
- Resolve advanced modeling challenges related to system routing, spatial constraints, constructability, and coordination.
- Ensure models meet defined Levels of Development (LOD) and Levels of Information Need (LOIN) at each project milestone.
- Oversee the population, validation, and maintenance of parametric data, shared parameters, classification systems, and metadata; Enforce adherence to naming conventions, model structures, and information exchange requirements outlined in the BIM Execution Plan (BEP).
- Proactively identify, analyze, and resolve clashes, interferences, and system conflicts across architectural, structural, and building services models.
- Lead or support model coordination processes using tools such as Navisworks, including clash detection, issue tracking, and resolution workflows.
- Perform advanced model quality control checks, including geometry accuracy, data integrity, and drawing consistency.
- Apply BIM quality checklists and contribute to the development of improved QA/QC procedures and best practices.
- Manage discipline models within the Common Data Environment (CDE), including version control, issue states, and information exchanges; Ensure timely and accurate model submissions in accordance with project protocols and information delivery milestones.
- Maintain organized model structures and support adherence to document control and archiving procedures.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and informal training to BIM I Technicians and junior staff; Support onboarding and skill development related to modeling standards, workflows, and tools.
- Contribute to lessons learned, workflow improvements, and the evolution of BIM standards and procedures.
Who You Are
- Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit and discipline-specific BIM modelling workflows.
- Strong understanding of building systems, installation practices, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Ability to independently manage complex models and resolve advanced coordination issues.
- Working knowledge of ISO 19650 principles, BIM Execution Plans, and Common Data Environments.
- Demonstrated experience using coordination and review tools such as Navisworks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and accountability for model quality.
- Effective self-management skills including prioritization in a deadline-driven environment.
