About Wheely
What is Wheely?
Wheely is a chauffeur-booking and ride-hailing company. Its job adverts say it is "redefining premium transportation across major cities in Europe, the US, and the Middle East" by blending "cutting-edge technology with the craft of five-star chauffeuring", and describe "a profitable, fast-growing scale-up with $43M raised and over $100M in annual revenue", trusted by "more than 100,000 active riders and 1,200 corporate accounts". The careers page adds that Wheely is "not a traditional ride-hailing company" and is "building a platform with user privacy at its core". LinkedIn lists it as privately held, founded in 2010, headquartered in London and in the 201-500 employee band. Wikipedia says the chauffeurs are "third-party partners" rather than employees, which fits the live board: none of its 38 adverts is for a chauffeur. The roles are in engineering, data science, product, operations, sales, marketing, finance, executive and customer service.
Where will I work?
London is the headquarters: the careers page calls it "our largest market and home to a range of teams including operations, strategy, and some data science and engineering roles". Nicosia, Cyprus is the engineering and R&D hub, Dubai is the EMEA customer service hub, Paris is the French operations hub and New York is the US operations hub. The live board has 17 adverts in London, 13 in Nicosia, 3 in New York, 2 each in Dubai and Paris and 1 in Los Angeles. The London and Nicosia adverts describe an "Office-based role" in West London or Nicosia with "flexible start and finish times, plus one remote day of your choice", so the pattern is 4 office days a week and one remote day. The Director of Engineering advert says "Our main engineering hub is in Cyprus. We're now building up London as a second hub". Most adverts offer "Relocation support, including visa sponsorship and allowance".
What is the Wheely team like?
The careers page describes "a team which combines passion, determination and expertise across a range of industries, from engineering and product design to marketing and operations" and says "We hire smart people who succeed and progress on merit—through results and consistent high performance—rather than tenure". The engineering adverts describe "a Go shop" migrating away from a Ruby monolith, with teams that favour "clean, maintainable code, shipped fast with TDD, DDD, and continuous integration and delivery". Product Manager adverts give "sole responsibility over the roadmap of one of our technical products" and say you would be "working directly with our founder". Data scientists join one of several hiring teams (Mapping, Matching, Pricing or Supply). The engineering interview process "includes a recruiter screen, algorithms and live coding", plus a system design section for senior candidates.
Work-Life Balance
29 of the 38 live adverts carry the same line, an "Office-based role in West London" (Nicosia in the Nicosia adverts) with "flexible start and finish times, plus one remote day of your choice". It appears in 16 of the 17 London adverts and all 13 Nicosia adverts, across eleven functions: Backend, Data Science, Product Management, DevOps/IT, Sales and Business Development, Engineering, Executive, iOS, Operations, Finance and Accounting, and Marketing. The 4 office days are an attendance pattern with a remote day on top, so this is a flexible-hours benefit, not a shorter working week. No core hours, fixed start and finish times or annual leave entitlement are stated in the adverts or on the careers page. The adverts for Paris, Dubai, New York and Los Angeles do not carry the wording, and the two Dubai customer service roles are shift-based in a 24/7 contact centre. The Senior Event Manager advert also asks for "Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when required".
