What is Vibrant Planet?
Vibrant Planet describes itself as "a team of technology, applied science, and land management leaders working to foster wildfire resilient communities and landscapes". Its about page says it began as a nonprofit in 2018 and then spun out a public benefit corporation (PBC), where "achieving social and environmental impact alongside financial returns is core to our mission and legal structure", while the nonprofit became the Vibrant Planet Data Commons. In 2023 it "merged with Pyrologix, the industry leader in wildfire risk modeling". The company sells decision-support software for community wildfire risk, utilities and land managers, and its home page announces a "statewide partnership" with CAL FIRE and counts "84 M" acres deployed. The team page counts "70 +" employees and "19" PhDs. On 2026-10-16 its Ashby board listed two roles: an ML Engineer and an Application Software Engineer.
Where will I work?
Both postings are "Remote, US": the ML Engineer says "[Pacific / Mountain time zone preferred]" and the Application Software Engineer says "PDT or MDT", with no travel. The ML Engineer posting asks for the "Ability to self-motivate, manage time, and work independently in a remote-first environment", and a staff bio on the team page mentions running "our virtual office". The team page also counts staff across "47" cities. Candidates must already be authorised to work in the US: the postings say "we regret that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship (including H-1B) at this time."
What is the Vibrant Planet team like?
The team page lists four operating principles: "Build for speed and scale", "Honor stewardship of our planet", "Make data publicly available" and "Collaborate rather than compete". It says the team brings "585" years of combined science experience, and the about page says the founders came from "science, remote sensing, land management and Silicon Valley tech companies like Netflix and Meta". The postings describe a company backed by "Grantham Foundation, Earthshot, Elemental Excelerator, Ecosystem Integrity Fund, Cisco, and Halogen Ventures". The ML Engineer posting adds that applicants do not need every listed skill: "We do not require that you have experience with every job description task."

Both postings list "Unlimited PTO policy" in their benefits block, with no minimum stated, so candidates should ask what typical usage looks like. Hours are full-time and the Application Software Engineer posting says "Travel: None". Both roles publish the same salary range, "$100,000 – $200,000", which is wide enough that the figure will depend on level.
