About University of Vermont

What is the University of Vermont?

The University of Vermont (UVM) is a research university in Burlington, Vermont. Its About page says "UVM was established in 1791 as the fifth college in New England (after Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown)" and "Today, the university blends the traditions of both a private and public university", and lists it as a "Top Tier Research University (Carnegie classification)". This profile covers the full-time, 12-month, exempt, non-union staff postings on the university's jobs site, not its faculty, union-represented or hourly postings.

Where will I work?

The UVM jobs site listed 126 postings on 2026-10-20, 79 of them staff, and this page lists the 14 exempt non-union ones at full time: "Network Engineering Team Lead" at "$130,000-150,000", "Deputy Chief Financial Officer" at "$175,000 to $225,000", "Environmental Compliance Manager", "Executive Communications Specialist" at "$68,000 to $75,000" and "Assistant Director for Business Operations" at "$62,000-$68,000". All are on the Burlington campus. Eight say "This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy", and one of those adds "This position is eligible for full-time telework in accordance with the university telecommuting policy". The handbook says "Nothing prohibits an individual employee or group of employees and their supervisor from establishing a flexible work schedule or a fully or partially remote work schedule in place of the standard workweek, as long as the needs of the department and expectations of the job are being met."

What is the University of Vermont team like?

The Non-Union Employee Handbook, revised 10 April 2026, says "While the standard workweek is considered to be 37.5 or 40 hours" for exempt staff, and "The department will not arbitrarily change work schedules." On development it says "UVM encourages participation in programs that develop and advance your job-related skills and knowledge". Telework is arranged for a particular employee: "Telework schedules will be reviewed annually." The Human Resources page describes its own policies as "UVM's generous time off and leave policies offer you flexibility and security."

Work-Life Balance

"Paid Time Off (PTO) combines all forms of paid time off with the exception of sick time, University recognized holidays and administrative closures into a single program". The schedule gives 20 days of PTO per 12-month period for the first five years of employment, 25 from five to ten years, 27 from ten to twenty and 30 after that, and "Employees may accrue up to two times their annual allocation of PTO." On top of it "Employees will receive paid time off for all annual administrative closures and holidays that UVM observes", twelve named days plus "The University will be closed for at least three days each year between December 26 and December 30 for Winter Break." The 2026 calendar lists 15: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day (Friday 3 July), Labor Day, "Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2026", the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day closure, "Winter Break: December 28, 29, and 30, 2026" and "New Year's Eve: Thursday, December 31, 2026". A new full-time employee therefore has 20 PTO days and 15 closure days, 35 total days, before sick time: "new employees are credited with an immediate accumulation of 12 days of sick time". Up to three PTO days can be designated cultural holidays, and "Eligible employees will receive their full salary, or full regular straight time pay, for up to eight weeks of paid parental leave".

Perks and Benefits

"UVM offers several different medical insurance coverage options so that you may choose a plan that best fits your needs", open to full-time 12-month staff from the hire date. "Groups A, B, or C: UVM pays 100% of the premium for the base-level dental plan for employees and their families." "Staff: The University will contribute 10% of an employee's annual base salary to their UVM retirement savings account, provided the employee has been employed in a benefits-eligible position on a continuous basis for at least three years" and puts in at least 2% pre-tax. "Employees in benefit groups A, B, or C may be granted tuition remission for up to 15 credits of course work or thesis research per year for any September 1 through August 31 period, tuition free."
