About University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
What is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?
UNC-Chapel Hill is a public research university in North Carolina. Its About page calls it "The nation's first public university", its History page says "In 1789, William Richardson Davie wrote the act that established the University", and its By the Numbers page counts "4,538 faculty members 9,849 staff members". This profile covers the permanent, full-time staff postings that are exempt from the North Carolina Human Resources Act (the board's "Permanent Staff (EHRA NF)" type), not the SHRA staff whose leave schedule is shorter, and not faculty, temporary or postdoctoral roles.
Where will I work?
The board listed 467 postings on 2026-10-20, 48 of them permanent EHRA Non-Faculty staff. This page lists 45 and leaves out one part-time posting and two clinical ones. Titles include "Senior Financial Analytics & Reporting Analyst", "Director of Energy Management", "Brand Marketing Strategist" and "Linux Systems Administrator", and a posting that states a hiring range gives it, such as "$78,000 - $83,934" for the Finance/Budget Analyst. Each posting names a campus department and gives its location only as "North Carolina, US". The HR pages read state no university-wide remote or hybrid arrangement.
What is the UNC team like?
The Employee Assistance Program offers "free and confidential counseling, resources, and tools" to employees and their families, and "Each eligible person can receive three free counseling sessions per concern each year". The Family Care page lists Helping Heels, which "connects UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, staff and students with part-time childcare, elder care and pet care services offered by fellow Tar Heels". The Perks page opens "Working at Carolina gets you more than a paycheck", and the Vacation Leave page says "We encourage staff and faculty to use vacation time."
Work-Life Balance
EHRA Non-Faculty staff hired on or after January 1, 2025 are under the Personal Leave Program: an accrual rate of "26 days / 208 hours per year (prorated for part-time)", earned monthly from the first month. Staff hired before that date "earn 24 days of Annual Leave per calendar year". The 2026 holiday calendar lists New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, a Spring Holiday, Memorial Day, Independence Day (3 July), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday and a "Winter Holiday Break" from "Thursday, Dec. 24 through Tuesday, Dec. 29": 12 days, with 30 and 31 December "Optional work days". A new staff member therefore has 26 days and 12 holidays, 38 total days (36 on the older tier). Sick leave is separate: "Full-time permanent employees (40 hours/week) earn 96 hours of Sick Leave annually (8 hours/month)", which "carries forward from year to year without limit". "The Personal Leave Program affects vacation leave only."
Perks and Benefits
"The State Health Plan of North Carolina administers two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans to University faculty and staff (SHRA and EHRA)", administered by Aetna, and "The University contributes toward the monthly cost of coverage for regular full-time employees." Retirement is mandatory and one of two: the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System, "a defined benefit plan sponsored by the State of North Carolina", or the Optional Retirement Program, funded by "University contributions of 6.84 percent of your salary"; either way "You are required to contribute exactly 6% (no more, no less) of your salary on a pre-tax basis". Through the tuition waiver program "eligible employees can have the tuition waived for an eligible course taken at any of the constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina System", with "three waivers per academic year". Paid parental leave is "up to 12 weeks", "compensated at 100% of the employee's regular straight-time weekly pay", for staff "Employed without a break in service for the 12 immediately preceding months". The University Child Care Center is "the University's exclusive childcare and early education center for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years".
