About University of Maryland, College Park

What is the University of Maryland?

The University of Maryland, College Park is the public flagship research university of the State of Maryland. Its About page says "Since its founding in 1856, UMD has grown and evolved to become a national powerhouse in research, academics, the arts and athletics" and signs itself "The Flagship Institution of the State of Maryland". This profile covers the staff postings on its Workday careers site: regular, full-time staff at College Park, not faculty, contractual, graduate-assistant, student, trades or clinical roles.

Where will I work?

The Workday site listed 210 postings on 2026-10-20, 85 of them full-time regular staff roles. This page lists 73 of them and leaves out 12: one at a site that names no city, seven trades and culinary roles and four clinical ones. Titles include "Payroll Coordinator", "Software and Data Engineer", "Staff Attorney, Public Records & Student Affairs Practice", "Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions" and "Senior Contracts Manager and Buyer", and the postings state a salary range, such as "$69,500 - $74,500" for the Payroll Coordinator. The university's telework page says "Telework is the concept of working from home or another location on a regular or intermittent basis", but "Although telework is an option for some positions, it is not a right for employees and it is not possible/suitable for all positions", so the supervisor decides role by role.

What is the UMD team like?

The Faculty Staff Assistance Program gives employees and their family members "free assessment, referral, and counseling services for personal or job-related concerns". The Care@Work benefit includes "Backup Care – Subsidized and vetted care for children and adults available 24/7/365 when regular, planned care is not available", and "The monthly premium membership fee is paid for by the University." Perks include "discounts on Terp football and basketball season ticket packages", discounted tickets to select performances at The Clarice, access to all library units and "free checking" at the State Employees Credit Union of Maryland.

Work-Life Balance

The Paid Time Off page describes annual leave as "paid leave earned and available for use by eligible employees that may be used for any purpose". Regular non-exempt staff earn "14 days (112 hours)" in their first year and 15 in their second; regular exempt staff earn "22 days (176 hours)" "Starting with the 1st month". "Beginning in calendar year 2026, employees are eligible to earn 16 holidays per year or 17 holidays during a year of general or congressional elections", and the 2026 calendar lists 17, including two spring-break days and two winter-break days. "Eligible employees are granted 3 Personal Leave days every calendar year, to be used for any purpose", and full-time regular employees "earn sick leave at the rate of 15 days per year". A new non-exempt employee therefore has 14 days of annual leave and 16 holidays, 30 in a year without an election (31 in 2026), and a new exempt employee 22 and 16, 38, before the personal and sick days. For bargaining-unit employees "Annual Leave is not available for use in the first 4 months of continuous initial institutional employment". Paid Family and Medical Leave, in effect since July 1, 2026, "offers 100% pay and job protection for medical, family, and military-related needs" and is open from "Day 1 of employment".

Perks and Benefits

Medical plans are the State of Maryland's, with "Kaiser, Carefirst and United Healthcare" options. New staff "will be defaulted to either the Employees' or Teachers' Reformed Pension System", a defined-benefit plan to which "You must contribute 7% of your annual salary", or can elect the Optional Retirement Program, where "the University contributes a certain percentage of your salary to your ORP account". Tuition remission lets eligible employees "or have dependents taking courses at any USM institution" apply through the USM Tuition Remission portal. Supplemental retirement accounts are open to "All employees (contractual and regular)".
