About University of Leeds

What is the University of Leeds?

The University of Leeds is a research-intensive university in West Yorkshire. Its About page calls it "one of the largest universities in the UK" and says it is part of the Russell Group, and its jobs page describes "a global community, with over 9,500 staff from more than 100 different countries". It has seven faculties, and its strategy for 2020 to 2030 is called Universal Values, Global Change. The campus is on Woodhouse Lane in Leeds, and the University says it is "just a short walk from the city centre".

Where will I work?

Roles are based on the Leeds campus: 25 of the 26 vacancies open to external applicants on 2026-10-18 were at the Main Campus and one was at St James's University Hospital. Seven postings say "This role will be based on the university campus with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner" and add "We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements". The staff benefits page says the University offers "flexible working hours, job sharing and many other schemes to help you achieve a healthy balance". Catering and kitchen roles run on 5-days-over-7 shifts, and those are not office posts.

What is the Leeds team like?

The University says its values of "collaboration, compassion, inclusivity and integrity" are at the heart of everything it does. Its board covers research fellows, lecturers and professional services: on 2026-10-18 it listed an HR Assistant, a Careers Consultant, a Student Information Service Supervisor, a Space Manager, a Head of Finance and a CPD Conferences and Events Coordinator, with advertised salaries from about 27,000 pounds for an HR Assistant to over 61,000 for the Head of Finance. A Summer Celebration is held on campus in late June, which the staff benefits page describes as organised and run by colleagues, with live music, workshops and games.

Work-Life Balance

The staff benefits page lists "26 days paid holiday every year, and approximately 16 days off for bank holidays and days when the University is closed (depending on how many hours you work)", which is about 42 days a year. It describes "generous family leave packages, including maternity, paternity, adoption/surrogacy and parental/partner leave", though the pages do not state lengths or pay. The University runs "an award winning on-campus nursery", Bright Beginnings, for children from three months to five years, with a playscheme in the school holidays for ages three to 11, and a childcare voucher scheme.

Perks and Benefits

Staff are offered one of the University's pension schemes with "generous employer contributions": the University of Leeds Pension and Assurance Scheme for academic and academic-related staff, a defined contribution plan that eligible support staff join automatically, and an optional career-average section. Benefits+ is "a collection of optional extras that are open to all staff", including Lifestyle+, Pensions+, Childcare+ and Travel+. Staff can "save on shopping, public transport, cycling, healthcare and financial services", get help with relocation costs if eligible, and use The Edge, "a £12 million pound fitness centre, pool, climbing wall and sports halls all located on campus". Development includes "professional, personal and leadership development" and the Staff Review and Development Scheme.
