About University of Kent

What is the University of Kent?

The University of Kent says "We stand for ambition, with our diverse community of staff and students committed to making a difference at regional, national and global level", and describes "our research-led community of international academics" alongside "our team of talented professional services staff". It teaches across ten academic schools, among them Computing; Engineering, Mathematics and Physics; Arts and Architecture; Psychology; Economics, Politics and International Relations; Social Sciences; Kent Law School; Humanities; Kent Business School; and Natural Sciences, with "great freedom in how they work". It has two main locations, Canterbury and Medway, and its regional partnerships include the Kent and Medway Medical School, which "directly serves our NHS and the health of the region, in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University", and the Universities of Medway, "a unique partnership between us, the University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church". Kent marked its 50th anniversary in the 2014/15 academic year. Since 1 August 2026 it has been part of a group: "The University of Greenwich and the University of Kent formed a pioneering new multi-university group called London and South- East (LASE) University Group", and its postings say new staff "will be employed by LASE but will work as part of the University of Kent academic division".

Where will I work?

The two vacancies on the board on 2026-10-20 were both at Canterbury, in the Kent and Medway Medical School: a part-time Senior Lecturer in Medical Education (Year 3 Specialty Lead in Mental Health) at Grade 9, "Hours per Week" 7, permanent, £59,390 to £66,819 pro rata, and a full-time Psychometrician at Grade 6, fixed term ending 31 July 2028, £32,722 to £36,320. The Senior Lecturer post asks for "a primary medical qualification, full registration with the GMC" and current NHS clinical practice, so it is a clinician's teaching post. The Psychometrician's benefits include "Hybrid working options allowing a flexible blend of office and home working (to be agreed in line with business needs)"; the Senior Lecturer posting lists no hybrid line. The staff benefits page describes amenities "right on campus" at Canterbury, including on-site food and drink, and the university's address is Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NZ. The job board is small today: its vacancy filter reads "Academic (1)" and "Administrative (1)".

What is the Kent team like?

The Working at Kent page says "Kent is a wonderful place to work - no matter where you are based", with pages for the New Staff Guide, a "Talent & Organisational Development vision" and a pensions page. Staff networks and events are part of the package: "Join a vibrant community of staff networks and take part in our calendar events throughout the year, including our popular all-staff BBQ in the summer", plus "Our annual celebration of staff achievements and contributions". Both postings promise "a friendly, open and collaborative working environment and support in your development and wellbeing", and the benefits page offers "Tailored training, mentoring and career resources for ongoing staff development". The Psychometrician sits in the Professional Services Curriculum and Assessment Team and works "closely with the Lead for Assessment and the Lead for Admissions".

Work-Life Balance

Both postings state the leave in one line: "43 days' leave per year (personal leave, bank holidays and additional days allocated for the Christmas period, pro rata for part-time staff)", and the university-wide benefits page says "Enjoy an allowance of 301 hours of leave per year (pro-rata for part-time staff) with the option to buy additional leave (1 or 2 weeks) per year". At 7 hours a day those 301 hours are the same 43 days, which includes the bank holidays and the Christmas days, against a UK bar of 36. The Working at Kent page calls it a "generous annual leave allowance". Staff can also take "a volunteering allowance of up to 25 hours per year", and one posting offers hybrid working. No page here states weekly hours or a fixed number of office days.

Perks and Benefits

Pensions come first in both postings: "Excellent pension scheme with generous employer contributions", with a Pensions page describing a "PensionsPlus scheme". Health benefits include "Corporate employee-funded healthcare plan, in partnership with Benenden Health" and an "Unum dental plan". Family and money perks: "OAKS nursery salary sacrifice scheme, offering trusted childcare solutions right on campus" for ages 1-5, "Cycle to Work scheme and discounts on public travel", and "Exclusive savings on a variety of products and services through our scheme with Edenred ('mylifestyle' app)". Study and leisure: "staff fee remission options", "free beginner language courses, including Arabic, French, Japanese, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish", "Reduced rates at our fully-equipped on-site gyms", "Discounted staff membership for the Gulbenkian theatre and cinema" and full access to the university library. The benefits page states no pension rates, salary bands or pay-award figures.
