About University of Hull

What is the University of Hull?

The University of Hull's jobs pages say "The University is one of the largest and most diverse employers in the region" and "We employ around 2,000 people – more than half of them women – from all over the UK and nearly 40 other countries around the world". They say it has "some of the best professors, lecturers, research and professional services staff around", so "you'll get the chance to work with people whose skills, interests and ambitions match yours". Its rewards page describes the campus as "situated in the leafy suburb of Newland", "well known for its friendly atmosphere", with "1000+ trees, rose-filled lawns, and ivy-clad red-brick buildings" next to "a 7-storey library, sports and fitness centre, world-class concert hall, surround-sound cinema, and art gallery". Its recruitment board on 2026-10-09 listed lecturer, research associate, scientific officer and project manager roles.

Where will I work?

The campus is on Cottingham Road in Hull. Its help centre says "we've embraced hybrid working wherever a role allows it, offering a mix of on-campus and at-home days", and its rewards page lists "Hybrid & flexible working options". Each posting on its recruitment board is marked "Eligible for Agile Working" or "Not Eligible for Agile Working": of the three postings read on 2026-10-09, one was eligible and two were not, so the hybrid option depends on the role. Staff who drive can use an "unlimited parking from only £5 a month" scheme or the Tusker electric car salary sacrifice scheme, and eligible staff get "unlimited travel on Stagecoach and East Yorkshire bus services within the SmartCommute zone".

What is the University of Hull team like?

Its rewards page says "We want you to have a long-term career with us, so we'll support you every step of the way", and "You'll find a range of training, development and leadership opportunities delivered in-house, online and externally". On equality it commits to "Treat all staff and students fairly" and "Create a welcoming and inclusive culture for all". Most posts have "a structured salary progression, ranging from pay bands 1–9", with annual increments "subject to satisfactory service", and its pension is the Universities Superannuation Scheme.

Work-Life Balance

Its help centre says "You'll enjoy a generous annual leave package of 25 days basic holiday, plus three extra days for both Christmas and Easter. That's on top of public Bank Holidays." Its working-week answer says "The standard working week is 36.5 hours, but this can vary depending on your contract", and it adds "Need to work around family or other commitments? We offer flexible working arrangements." On family leave it says "We recognise the importance of family life", offering "up to 76 weeks of maternity or adoption leave", as well as "paternity leave, parental leave, dependants' leave, carer's leave, and leave for fertility treatment". Its "Occupational Health and Wellbeing service offers confidential support for your physical, social, workplace, financial, spiritual and emotional wellbeing", its "trained Mental Health First Aiders are also on hand", and staff can use "free counselling sessions" through local providers. A privately run nursery, Little Einsteins, is on campus, with fees.
