About University of Edinburgh
What is the University of Edinburgh?
The University of Edinburgh's jobs pages describe "a University that has made significant contributions to society, medicine, physics and teaching for over four centuries", set in "one of the world's most attractive cities with active arts and social sectors". Its footer says it is "a charitable body, registered in Scotland". Its jobs pages promise "careers and roles in just about every area you can think of", whether you are looking for "entry-level, mid-career or roles at the top of your chosen specialism", and they sort those roles into Academic posts and Professional Services, which "supports the University's teaching, research, and wider campus operations".
Its roles page lists the kinds of work on offer: "administration, research, teaching, technical support, or specialist roles". It points candidates to "Strategy 2030: our Vision, purpose and values" and to "Edinburgh Impact: our people" to see what the University is aiming for and who is doing the work.
Where will I work?
Its staff-support page lists "Flexible and hybrid working, work-life balance support, and a culture that prioritises staff wellbeing". The three professional-services postings read on 2026-10-09 (a research accountant, a contracts executive and a cash forecasting lead) are each marked Hybrid working on its recruitment site, each full-time at 35 hours a week and each open to part-time or flexible working patterns. Two add "We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working". The roles on the board sit in Edinburgh, mostly the Central Area, with others at the Western General campus, and some are advertised across the United Kingdom. Catering, hospitality and animal-care roles appear on the same board and work on site.
What is the University of Edinburgh team like?
Its career development page lists "Online learning: flexible courses covering professional and personal development, governance, sustainability and data skills", "Leadership and management programmes", "Staff scholarships and access to moocs and short courses", "Career guidance and feedback" and "One-to-one coaching and events to help you grow and connect with colleagues". As "a proud signatory" of the Technician Commitment, it says it supports technicians "at every stage" with "clear, transparent career pathways". Its wellbeing page lists an Employee Assistance Programme with counselling, an Occupational Health Service, "staff gym discounts, lunchtime walks" and a Chaplaincy team "open to all faiths, and none".
Work-Life Balance
Its benefits page lists "A highly competitive annual leave allowance - 36 days plus four public holidays (pro rata)", which for a full-time employee comes to 40 days a year. Through its "A Day to Make a Difference" initiative "every staff member is entitled to an additional day of paid leave to volunteer for a charity, organisation, or other good cause". It also lists "flexible working hours, paid maternity and paternity leave, shared parental leave, and emergency family leave", a "Returning Parents' Coaching Programme" and a Special Leave Policy "covering needs beyond family responsibilities such as bereavement and compassionate leave". It says "All University employees can benefit from a generous occupational pension" and that it is "a Real Living Wage accredited employer".
