About Transportation Alternatives
What is Transportation Alternatives?
Transportation Alternatives is a New York City advocacy nonprofit. Its careers page calls it "New York City’s leading safe streets advocacy organization" and says "For 50 years, TA has successfully advocated for transformational change even when others said it wasn’t possible", pointing to campaigns such as banning cars from Central Park and a protected bike lane over the Brooklyn Bridge. Its mission is "to reclaim New York City from cars, transforming our streets into safe, sustainable, and equitable places to walk, bike, take transit, gather, and thrive". It is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Where will I work?
TA's office is at 111 John Street, Suite 260, New York, and its benefits list a "Hybrid work schedule (combination of in-person and remote)". Its one open role on 2026-10-17, listed inline on the careers page, is a full-time Managing Director in the "New York City Metropolitan Area" at a stated compensation of $180,000. The careers page lists a hybrid schedule rather than remote work, and does not say how many days are in person.
What is the Transportation Alternatives team like?
The Managing Director posting describes TA's senior internal leader as "the person responsible for ensuring that the staff, culture, systems and revenue infrastructure behind TA's advocacy are as strong as the cause itself", and says the role manages "TA's relationship with its staff union". The careers page says TA's "staff, volunteers, and members have been on the frontlines of building streets for people". It states no headcount.
Work-Life Balance
The benefits list on the careers page names "Summer Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day", which gives the months but not whether the Friday is a full day off or a shortened one. It also lists "Three weeks vacation to start + 10 paid sick days" and "12 weeks paid parental leave", next to the hybrid work schedule. No second page repeats the summer Fridays line, so the careers page is the only source for it.
Perks and Benefits
The careers page lists "Medical (with HRA), dental, vision, and life coverage", "Optional pre-tax FSA and Commuter Benefits", a "401k with 3% match", the hybrid schedule, three weeks of vacation to start with 10 paid sick days, summer Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
