About Sumo Digital
What is Sumo Digital?
Sumo Digital is one of the UK's largest game development studios, founded in Sheffield in 2003. Part of Sumo Group, it builds AAA games both as a lead developer and as a co-development partner for the world's biggest publishers — its credits include Sackboy: A Big Adventure, co-development on the Forza Horizon and Hitman series, and work with Microsoft, Sony, Sega and 2K. Sumo Group also includes publisher Secret Mode.
Where will I work?
Sumo's studios span Sheffield (HQ), Nottingham, Leamington Spa, Newcastle, Warrington, Brighton and beyond. The careers site is explicit about flexibility: "We have a flexible approach to how you work — our studios have opportunities for hybrid, remote or in-studio work. While we have core working hours, our studios can be flexible on working patterns to meet the demands of people's needs."
What is the Sumo team like?
Around 1,100 people across engineering, art, design, production and corporate teams. Glassdoor reviewers score work-life balance 4.4 out of 5 (UK), with comments that "the company seems to put a lot of effort into ensuring we have good work/life balance" — a notable standout in an industry known for crunch. Its Best Companies profile also lists gym access and mental-health support among the wellbeing provisions.
Work-Life Balance
Sumo Group holds a 2-star Best Companies accreditation and ranked #46 Best Large Company to Work For in the UK (November 2025), plus #5 in the East Midlands. The careers site backs the award with concrete provisions: "days off for volunteering, your celebration and duvet days to keep your work-life balance in check", five paid learning days a year, and mental health support through trained Mental Health First Aiders and counselling services.
