About Standard Chartered

What is Standard Chartered?

Standard Chartered Bank PLC (LSE: STAN; HKEX: 2888) is a British multinational banking and financial-services group, founded in 1969 through the merger of The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (1853) and the Standard Bank of British South Africa (1862). The bank operates across 50+ markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East — its strategic geographic focus distinguishes it from the UK's big four high-street banks.

Where will I work?

Standard Chartered's global HQ is in London (1 Basinghall Avenue), with major regional hubs in Singapore (APAC), Hong Kong, Dubai (MEA), Mumbai/Chennai/Bangalore (India + GBS), Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Lagos and Johannesburg. The bank has a substantial Global Business Services (GBS) footprint in India, China and Poland. Office-based roles are hybrid by default.

What is the team like?

Around 81,000 employees globally across corporate + investment banking, transaction banking, financial markets, wealth management, retail/private banking, technology + operations, GBS, risk + compliance, finance and corporate functions. Standard Chartered is consistently recognised for its inclusion benefits and was the first global bank to introduce gender-neutral parental leave worldwide.

Work-Life Balance — Gender-Neutral Global Parental Leave (the headline benefit)

From 1 September 2023, Standard Chartered introduced a global minimum 20 weeks of paid parental leave for every employee, irrespective of gender, relationship status or how a child comes to permanently join the family. The bank explicitly framed the policy as "giving parents the option of undertaking more equitable caregiving responsibilities" — and crucially, where local law provides for greater entitlement, local law prevails. So 20 wks is the floor; markets like the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Singapore typically see higher numbers due to statutory + market enhancement. This makes Standard Chartered one of the very few global banks operating a truly worldwide equal-parents policy.

Perks and Benefits

  • Global minimum 20 weeks gender-neutral paid parental leave (since Sept 2023) — applies in every market irrespective of relationship status, birth/adoption/surrogacy.
  • Local-law top-up — where local statutory or market practice provides more, that takes effect; the 20 wks is a floor.
  • Standard Chartered Share Plans — Sharesave + Performance Share Plan.
  • Private medical + critical illness cover + life assurance (market-dependent).
  • Generous pension with employer contribution.
  • Hybrid working for most office roles; flexibility varies by market and function.
  • Standard Chartered Networks — Aspire (Women), Pride (LGBTQ+), Disability + Mental Health, Cultural Heritage.
