About Run for Something

What is Run for Something?

Run for Something is a U.S. progressive political organization that recruits and supports young, diverse progressives running for local office. Since launching in January 2017, RFS has recruited over 140,000 potential political candidates, endorsed over 3,000 candidates, and won over 1,000 elections. Over half of endorsed candidates are women, more than half are BIPOC, and over a quarter are members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Win or lose, RFS alumni have meaningfully made life better for millions of Americans across the country.

Run for Something is a 501(c)(4) organization (with a separate 501(c)(3) sister organisation, Run for Something Civics) and works through a paired structure: Run for Something endorses Democrats sharing its values, while alumni continue to lead in their communities long after the cycle ends. Its 2024 Strategic Plan reframed the work around long-term sector investment and infrastructure.

Where will I work?

Run for Something is a national organization with a permanently remote office structure. Team members are located across the United States in multiple time zones. Employees work core business hours, Monday through Thursday, in their local time zone. As long as you're based anywhere in the United States, you can apply.

What is the RFS team like?

Five values anchor the culture: Bold & Fearless (high risk tolerance, not afraid of fighting the system or of primaries), Open & Honest (radical openness and transparency), Supportive & Respectful (candidates' needs first, respecting people's lives outside work), Long-Term & Strategic (committed to long-term goals, investing in talent both inside RFS and in the field), and Progressive & Diverse (cultural competency, diversity across race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, geography, and professional background). A staff-led DEI Council meets monthly to advance internal and external DEI initiatives, and Council members are compensated for each term they serve. Employee resource groups (ERGs) include employees of color, caregivers, Black employees, and white employees focused on allyship and anti-racism.

Work-Life Balance

In 2022, RFS piloted and then made permanent a four-day work week. Employees work four approximately 8-hour days, Monday through Thursday, with Fridays off. Combined with Unlimited Paid Time Off, paid sabbaticals (after 3 years of service), and over four weeks of organization-wide holiday closures (including a two-week winter break), the schedule is designed for the long haul. Communication norms protect off-work hours.
