About Mobilization for Justice

What is Mobilization for Justice?

Mobilization for Justice (MFJ) is a New York City civil legal services nonprofit. Its mission page says "Mobilization for Justice’s (MFJ) mission is to achieve justice for all" and that it provides "the highest-quality free, direct civil legal assistance, conduct community education and build partnerships, engage in policy advocacy, and bring impact litigation". Its history page says "We began as the legal arm of Mobilization for Youth, a large community-based anti-poverty program founded in 1962", that it became an independent organization in 1968 as MFY Legal Services, Inc., changed its name in 2017 and "In 2018, we launched our first office in the Bronx". Its job announcements say "We assist more than 14,000 New Yorkers each year, benefiting over 24,000" and describe staff of attorneys, paralegals, social workers and support staff; the announcements give the headcount as more than 145, 150 or 165 depending on the posting.

Where will I work?

MFJ is based at 100 William Street, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10038, with a Bronx office at 424 East 147th Street. The job announcements describe a hybrid arrangement: "Employees have the ability to work flexible hours and are able to work two days a week from home". The supervising attorney announcement for its special education program says the position "is based out of our Manhattan office", and the housing announcement covers tenants in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn. This is New York City work, not a remote role.

What is the MFJ team like?

The announcements call it "a diverse, unionized, and collegial workplace where staff share the organization’s mission to achieve social justice". Pay for the non-supervisory roles is set by a union contract: the Social Worker announcement (July 2026) says the salary "is pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement" with a range of $69,303.69 to $126,660.64, and the one-year Kinship Caregiver Law Project attorney role is "a one-year, temporary position, with the possibility of permanent hire" at $83,811.10 to $93,567.35. The supervising attorney announcements state ranges of $117,809 to $159,629 (Housing Rights) and $125,000 to $160,000 (Children's Rights, special education). The work is legal aid for low-income New Yorkers, and the housing announcement has its supervisors "Carry own docket of cases" alongside supervising attorneys and paralegals.

Work-Life Balance

MFJ's announcements all list a Summer Fridays benefit in plain words: "Summer Fridays: MFJ offices close early every Friday at 2pm starting Memorial Day through Labor Day". They also offer "Employees are granted up to 75 days of parental leave and may use sick and vacation days if they have them", and flexible hours with two days a week from home. The announcements do not give vacation or holiday day counts, so this profile states none.

Perks and Benefits

Each announcement says "MFJ provides employees with health, dental, and vision insurance at no cost to the employee. MFJ also provides additional benefits such as commuter benefits, FSA, HRA, and an Employee Assistance Program". Salary ranges are printed in every announcement, and the job openings page also invites attorney and supervisor candidates to send resumes for future openings.
