About Middlesex University

What is Middlesex University?

Middlesex University is a London university. Its Our Story page says it was "founded as a women's teacher training college in Tottenham in 1878" and now delivers "outstanding education informed by our research and knowledge exchange on three continents", and its footer lists campuses in London, Dubai and Mauritius. The main campus is at The Burroughs in Hendon, north London. Staff are employed either by the University or by MU Services Limited, a company "wholly owned by Middlesex" that "provides professional services directly to the University". Since 1 February 2021 new professional services staff are contracted by MU Services, and all five vacancies on the University's recruitment site on 2026-10-18 were professional services roles.

Where will I work?

The five vacancies were all at the Hendon campus. The Hybrid Working Policy (version 1.0, published September 2026) says "The campus therefore remains the primary place of work for most employees", and describes hybrid working as an operational arrangement rather than a contractual entitlement: staff may be required on campus on any working day. The health and wellbeing page adds that, where business needs allow, the University supports "compressed hours, job-sharing, part-time working and homeworking one or two days a week". The leave figures below come from the University's UK employee benefits page.

What is the Middlesex team like?

The benefits page tells new colleagues to expect "a friendly, highly valued staff community", and the University says it has two recognised trade unions, UCU and UNISON, and runs the One Middlesex Staff Awards, usually held annually, in which colleagues nominate each other. It says it holds the highest, Excellence, level of the Mayor of London's Good Work Standard, is a member of the work-life balance charity Working Families, and is a Disability Confident Leader. The five roles open on 2026-10-18 were an Applicant Services Assistant (two posts), a Student Visa Compliance Officer, a Student and Campus Enquiry Co-ordinator (four posts), an Alumni Communications and Engagement Assistant and a UK Recruitment and Outreach Co-ordinator (two posts), with advertised salaries from 28,840 to 37,357 pounds a year.

Work-Life Balance

The University says "We offer 30 days of annual leave to professional services staff and 35 days for academic staff, professors and senior managers. In addition we are closed for all bank holidays." It adds "7 days of extra leave over the Christmas holiday period for all staff", so a professional services employee gets 45 days a year with England's eight bank holidays. Family leave is "52 weeks' maternity and adoption leave and generous maternity and adoption pay", two weeks' paid paternity leave with up to 26 weeks of additional paternity leave, and up to five days of paid dependency leave a year. Permanent staff can apply for a sabbatical of normally up to six months after five years, though it is not a contractual right, and any member of staff may ask to change their working pattern or hours.

Perks and Benefits

Staff employed directly by the University join the Local Government Pension Scheme or the Teachers' Pension Scheme, both defined benefit. MU Services staff join a defined contribution scheme where the employer pays "a flat rate of 10%" and the default employee contribution is 5%. There is a 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme with counselling, memberships of the Fika and Togetherall wellbeing platforms, and a peer support service called KindMind run by staff who are Mental Health First Aiders. Career development covers leadership and management programmes, coaching and "fee waivers for employees wishing to follow a relevant Middlesex degree programme". Staff also get free membership of the on-campus Sheppard Library, an interest-free season ticket loan, a Cycle to Work scheme for bikes and accessories up to 3,000 pounds, a free eye test every two years and discounted Costco membership.
