Marqeta is a modern card-issuing platform founded in 2010 by Jason Gardner in Oakland, California. The company operates an open API platform that lets businesses create and customise their own payment card programs — the infrastructure under the hood for fintechs like Affirm, Klarna, DoorDash, Uber, Square, and Instacart. Marqeta went public on NASDAQ in 2021 (ticker MQ) and is one of the largest pure-play card-issuing companies globally.
The platform powers Buy Now Pay Later virtual cards, expense management cards, on-demand delivery, gig-economy payouts, and embedded financial products across the consumer-fintech and enterprise-payments stack.
