About Indiana University

What is Indiana University?

Indiana University is a public university with campuses across Indiana. Its About page says "Since 1820, Indiana University has helped students create brighter futures", and its home page counts "9 campuses", "930+ academic programs" and "90,000+ students". This profile covers the exempt staff postings on its Candidate Gateway, the ones whose Job Classification says "FLSA: Exempt". Nonexempt (hourly), part-time, clinical and trade postings are not listed.

How much time off do I get?

The exempt staff page says that as a full-time exempt staff employee "you earn 20 hours per month, equaling 30 days (240 hours) of paid time off each year", and "24 hours per month, equaling 36 days (288 hours) a year" after five years. It is one plan: "Paid time off (PTO) benefits provide time off for vacation, sick leave, funeral attendance, and other absences from work", and staff "Can allocate up to a maximum of 136 hours of unused PTO to a sick leave account at the end of each year"; "Unused PTO is paid at time of separation from the university". On top of PTO the holiday page lists ten paid holidays for 2026 (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a floating Campus Holiday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day observed on 3 July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving on Thursday and Friday, and Christmas Day) and a winter break on 28, 29, 30 and 31 December: 14 days, each "considered to be eight hours for 100% FTE staff". That is 30 + 14 = 44 days at entry. Staff can also take "one day (eight hours) of paid leave for participating in a community volunteer event, sponsored by an IU school or unit".

What benefits come with the job?

Exempt staff are enrolled in the IU Retirement Plan, a section 403(b) plan: "Indiana University contributes 9% of your budgeted base salary (excluding supplemental pay)", the plan is "fully funded by IU", and it has a three-year cliff-vesting requirement. Health cover is "two medical plan options through Anthem" (a high deductible plan with a health savings account, and a PPO) with vision cover, and postings list a "Health savings account with generous IU contributions". Dental is through Cigna, with "Two routine cleanings and exams (preventative care) per year covered at 100%". "Basic group life insurance paid by IU" is a "$50,000 basic life insurance policy" from the hire date; long term disability "replaces up to 60% of your income" but "You pay the total premium". Staff with 12 months in a benefits-eligible position get "six weeks (240 hours) of paid parental leave". "The IU Tuition Benefit helps lower the cost of IU courses for employees, retirees, and family members", and the SupportLinc programme gives "free, confidential support" with "Up to six face-to-face counseling sessions per presenting issue per year".

Where will I work?

Postings sit mainly on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses: of the 333 postings on the board on 2026-10-21, 219 were in Bloomington, 76 in Indianapolis, 10 on more than one campus, 9 in Martinsville, 8 in Richmond, 5 in South Bend, two each in Gary and Washington, DC, and one each in Kokomo and New Albany. Of 56 exempt postings read, 7 say the role is eligible for a hybrid schedule (one adds remote work), 11 say "This is an in-person position", and the rest say nothing about it; the hybrid ones are listed as Hybrid. The roles are professional staff jobs, for example Academic Advisor, Information Security Analyst, Pre-Award Grants Manager and Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships.

What do the roles pay?

Postings that state pay do so as an annual figure: of 30 exempt postings read in one sample, 17 carry an Advertised Salary section, for example "$68,200.00 - $77,000.00 annually" for the Information Security Analyst and "$115,000 - 125,000 annually" for the Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. Hourly rates such as "$15.00 per hour" and "$41.14 per hour" appear only on nonexempt postings, which are not listed.
