About GiveDirectly

What is GiveDirectly?

GiveDirectly is a non-profit that sends cash directly to people living in extreme poverty and lets them decide how to spend it. Its About page puts it this way: "GiveDirectly is a nonprofit that lets donors like you send money directly to the world's poorest households." The organisation says "Since 2009, we've delivered over $1 billion in cash directly into the hands of 2+ million people living in poverty" and currently runs operations in the DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda and the U.S. The jobs page describes the model as "an end-to-end platform that enables funders to provide direct cash transfers to people living in poverty". The privacy policy calls it a US 501(c)(3) non-profit based in New York. On 7 November 2026 the careers board listed 34 openings across technology, product, fundraising, growth, people, internal audit and country programmes.

Where will I work?

Most of the central roles are remote: the careers page says "Our central support roles are fully remote first", and one advert names office hubs in New York, London and Nairobi. Remote is not worldwide, though. A hiring-countries page linked from the adverts says remote means within a list of 20 countries where GiveDirectly can employ staff through its own entities or an employer of record. Ten are in Africa (the DRC for local nationals only, Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa and Nigeria). Four of the eleven remote adverts require at least three hours of overlap with East Africa Time, and two more mention working across East Africa Time and US Eastern Time. Other roles sit in country programmes, such as risk management in the DRC and Mozambique, senior operations and programme roles in Goma and Maputo, and external relations in Rwanda; they are not listed on this site, because the flexible-hours statement below is about the central support roles. Some adverts expect travel, for example "You are happy to travel to meet your colleagues in the US, Europe and Africa a few weeks a year.", and the Emergency Cash Delivery advert asks staff to "Deploy on short notice to implement Emergency Cash crisis response programs".

What is the GiveDirectly team like?

The careers page says "Our 800+ team members across 30 countries bring a wide range of perspectives from nonprofits, business, education, and beyond." The company reports that 90% of staff feel a strong sense of belonging and 80% see meaningful opportunities to learn and grow, from its own twice-yearly surveys (not independently checked). The adverts describe the culture as "candid, analytical, and non-hierarchical", with "high ownership" expected and "real responsibility early" given. Pay follows a no-negotiation policy: "We also have a no negotiation policy to ensure we are paying staff equitably across roles." Most adverts publish base salary by country, typically for the United States, the United Kingdom and Kenya, along with a bonus target and an annual benefits stipend. Hiring runs from application review and an initial chat through a take-home skills assessment for some roles and team interviews to the final decision and offer.

Work-Life Balance

The careers FAQ is explicit that working hours are flexible for its central support roles. It starts with "Life doesn’t run on a 9-to-5 schedule, and neither do we." and goes on: "Whether that means starting early, structuring your day around school drop-offs, deep focus work, or afternoon walks, we trust you to manage your time in a way that lets you deliver impact without sacrificing balance." Once the encouraged three hours of overlap with East Africa Time are covered, "Beyond that, how and when you work is entirely up to you". The Senior Software Engineer (Remote) advert says staff are "encouraged to set a schedule that works for you", as long as there is enough overlap with the team. On time off, five of the 34 live adverts (two of the eleven listed here, both Senior Software Engineer roles) list "Unlimited PTO (that we encourage staff to take!)", the M&E Associate advert says "Flexible paid time off that staff is encouraged to take", and the careers page says "Take the time you need to rest and recharge — we trust you to manage your schedule and do your best work." No number of leave days and no weekly-hours figure is stated. Roles also carry some travel to countries of operation for "team retreats or field visits".

Perks and Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO that staff are encouraged to take, in two of the eleven listed adverts and five of the 34 on the board (the M&E Associate advert says flexible paid time off instead)

  • Paid parental leave (length not stated) and statutory retirement benefits, per the careers page
  • An annual budget for courses, conferences and professional development
  • A home office setup and desk allowance for eligible positions
  • A competitive salary that includes a bonus, with bonus targets of 10% or 15% of base in the adverts read
