About Ghost

What is Ghost?

Ghost is a non-profit, open-source publishing platform built for professional creators and independent media. Founded in April 2013 by John O'Nolan and Hannah Wolfe, Ghost was set up as a non-profit foundation "so that it would always be true to its users, rather than shareholders or investors" — and the legal constitution ensures the company can never be bought or sold. One hundred percent of revenue is reinvested into the product and the community.

The platform powers more than 100 million installs to date, from personal bloggers to large publishing teams. The Ghost Foundation publishes its live metrics openly: $10,472,305 annual run rate, 29,741 active customers, 9 billion requests per month, and 52,751 GitHub stars. The premium managed-service Ghost(Pro) funds the open-source core, creating a sustainable, self-funded business with no VCs or external donations.

Where will I work?

Ghost has been fully remote since 2013, long before it was common — and has never had an office in the history of the business. The team spans 5 continents, 16 nationalities and 15 languages. As long as you have wifi, you're set. Twice a year the whole team gets together for a week-long in-person retreat — recent trips: Spain, Thailand, Dubai, Egypt and Austria.

What is the Ghost team like?

Ghost is intentionally small — committed to "never growing our team to more than around 50 people." The current Ghost Foundation team is a tight-knit group of long-tenured developers, designers, infrastructure engineers, support and operations staff with public hire dates going back to 2013. Co-founders John (CEO) and Hannah (CTO) still lead the company. The culture is described as "calm, creative" with "a common allergy to nonsense" — there are "no lengthy manifestos" and "no breathless memos about how we're 'fixing media' or 'changing the world'."

Work-Life Balance

A four-day work week with three-day weekends year-round. Ghost closes the office for two weeks each December, and the team is "encouraged to take regular time off from work to relax." Most people have only one or two Zoom calls per week — calendars are kept empty to "leave plenty of space for focusing on creative work." Generous and fully paid parental leave is available when families grow.
