About Fraser Coast Regional Council
What is Fraser Coast Regional Council?
Fraser Coast Regional Council is the local government for Queensland's Fraser Coast — the Hervey Bay and Maryborough region, home to about 111,000 people. Formed in 2008 by amalgamating Hervey Bay City, Maryborough City, Woocoo Shire and part of Tiaro Shire, the council delivers water and wastewater (Wide Bay Water), roads, waste, parks, libraries, planning and development services — and runs two airports (Hervey Bay and Maryborough), plus cemeteries and botanic gardens. The region is the gateway to K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island, and Hervey Bay calls itself Australia's whale-watching capital.
Where will I work?
The council's administration centre is at 77 Tavistock Street, Torquay, in Hervey Bay, with a second civic base in heritage-rich Maryborough — birthplace of P.L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins. Roles span both towns and the wider region.
What is the Fraser Coast team like?
A workforce of roughly 1,000 across engineering, water operations, planning, environment, libraries, IT and corporate services. Current advertising runs from a Senior Strategic Planner ($104,018-$114,225 + super + relocation allowance) to IT infrastructure, executive support and asset-planning roles — the professional advertising is genuinely white-collar-heavy.
Work-Life Balance
The 9-day fortnight is written into the package line of the council's own job ads: the Senior Strategic Planner ad reads "+ 17.5% leave loading + 9-day fortnight", and the same "+ 9-day fortnight" line appears on IT and executive-assistant ads. Queensland local-government Stream A conditions run 36.25-hour weeks, so the nine-day fortnight is a genuine hours reduction to 72.5 hours per fortnight — every second Friday off with the hours actually dropping, not compressed. Add Queensland's 17.5% annual-leave loading, superannuation above the private-sector baseline, and a subtropical coastal lifestyle where the whales commute past your weekend.
