About Environment Bank
What is Environment Bank?
Environment Bank works with landowners and farmers to turn low-biodiversity land into thriving habitats, and it has built what it calls "the nation's largest and fastest growing network of BNG Habitat Banks". Its Habitat Banks have already created thousands of Biodiversity Units, which give developers "an effective off-site Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) solution", and those units have helped unlock projects for Everton FC, Aldi and National Grid. It began in 2006 by shaping nature policy with Natural England and Defra, work that led to the launch of Biodiversity Net Gain, and in 2021 it received backing from the British Sustainable Infrastructure Fund at Gresham House to launch large-scale Habitat Banks across England. It also runs Nature Shares, a newer nature-based solution for businesses whose flagship project, Bog Hall Habitat Bank on the Castle Howard Estate in North Yorkshire, includes a planned beaver release. It is a certified B Corp.
Where will I work?
From home or from one of Environment Bank's three office hubs, including York: it offers "both fully-remote and flexible-hybrid working options". Land and ecology staff visit the Habitat Banks as they evolve, and the whole company meets in person twice a year. There are no open roles right now, but it says it is "always on the look out for passionate ecologists" to join its national ecology team.
What is the Environment Bank team like?
A mix of ecologists, land managers, habitat specialists, geospatial analysts, planning advisors, account managers, digital creatives and legal experts, all working towards reversing biodiversity loss. Its values are to be curious, inclusive, authentic and ambitious. Staff quoted on its careers page talk about passionate colleagues, the flexibility and support to grow (one ecologist moved into the innovation team building Nature Shares in their first year) and friendships made at the York office. The team takes part in an annual sponsored charity walk and other fundraising challenges together.
