About Ember
Who We Are
Ember is an independent energy think tank dedicated to accelerating the global transition to clean electricity. We believe that the shift to renewable energy is essential for addressing the climate crisis, and we work to make this transition happen faster through rigorous data analysis and strategic advocacy.
Founded in 2008 as Sandbag Climate Campaign to reform the EU carbon market, we rebranded as Ember in 2020 to reflect our expanded global focus. Our mission is to use data-driven insights to shift the conversation toward impactful policies and empower other advocates to drive the transition toward a zero-emission future. Today, we're recognized globally as a leading voice in electricity sector transformation, working with governments, organizations, and advocates across continents.
What We Do
We gather, curate, and analyze data on the global power system, focusing on emissions, trends, and policy impacts. Our work transforms complex energy data into clear, actionable insights that drive real-world change.
Our flagship reports, such as the Global Electricity Review and European Electricity Review, provide comprehensive insights into the progress and challenges in the electricity sector. These publications are widely cited by policymakers, journalists, and climate advocates worldwide. We also specialize in tracking and promoting clean energy sources like solar and wind, and in highlighting the importance of reducing coal mine methane emissions.
By providing open and accessible data, we support policymakers, media, and advocates in making informed decisions to accelerate the energy transition. Our research influences policy discussions at the highest levels, from national governments to international climate negotiations.
