What is ConnectCPA?
ConnectCPA is a Chartered Professional Accounting firm for growing businesses, run entirely online. Mike Pinkus and Lior Zehtser, who both worked as senior associates at PricewaterhouseCoopers, founded it in Toronto in 2014 "with a bold vision: to redefine accounting for growing businesses through technology and real-time financial information." What started as a tech-enabled accounting practice has become, in its words, "a full-service external finance function": online bookkeeping, accounting and tax, payroll, accounts payable, invoicing and receivables, controllership and technology system design, built on cloud platforms such as Xero and QuickBooks Online. The firm says it has served more than 1,000 clients across 10+ industries. Xero has named it partner of the year three times, most recently as Accounting Partner of the Year in 2024, and it has repeatedly made The Globe and Mail's ranking of Canada's top growing companies. It also hosts GrowthTales, a podcast featuring entrepreneurs it has worked with.
Where will I work?
From home. "Fully Remote. You will be working from your home office (who doesn't love that?)" heads the benefits list on every current posting, and the careers page promises "no commute, no dress code". ConnectCPA calls itself "an online/virtual firm, paperless, and tech-savvy". Its listed address is on Yonge Street in Toronto, but its managers live across the country, from Squamish and northern British Columbia to Calgary and Newfoundland. Full-time roles are open to candidates "anywhere in Canada"; a team of contract bookkeepers works remotely from the Philippines, where the firm held its first team retreat in 2023. Postings ask for an internet connection of at least 6 Mbps up and down "to keep Zoom running smoothly".
What is the ConnectCPA team like?
More than 130 people, according to its team page. ConnectCPA passed its 100th employee in 2022, eight years after starting with "a small founding crew". It describes itself as operating "with a startup mentality: we experiment, we collaborate, we embrace new technologies, we automate, and we actually like Mondays (most of the time)" — and adds: "We wear hoodies, not suits. We talk on Slack more than email." Since 2021 the work has been split into specialised departments — accounting, bookkeeping, onboarding, payroll and accounts payable — each with its own leadership, and in 2023 the firm added controllership services and robotic process automation for bookkeeping. Its four stated values are Be Transparent, Ownership, Above & Beyond and Team First. Postings promise a "supportive, inclusive, and low-ego environment" without "unnecessary corporate politics", where "everyone has a seat at the table".
Work-Life Balance
ConnectCPA's "Summer Dis-Connect" gives everyone Fridays off through July and August — eight or nine paid days off each summer. "Fridays off in July & August (yep, paid!)" appears on all six current postings, for employees in Canada and contractors in the Philippines alike. In winter the firm closes for a "Paid December holiday shutdown. Rest, recharge, repeat." On top of both, the careers page describes a generous time-off policy: "Take the time you need with our flexible and supportive time-off policy." Outside those breaks it works a normal full-time week — postings don't state weekly hours — and the job is client service, with month-end deadlines and several clients at once.
