About The Commonwealth Fund
What is The Commonwealth Fund?
The Commonwealth Fund is a private health policy foundation in New York City. Its About page says it "was established in 1918 with the broad charge to enhance the common good", and that today its mission is "to promote a high-performing, equitable health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable". It carries that out by "supporting independent research on health care issues and making grants to improve health care practice and policy", and it also runs an international program in health policy.
Where will I work?
The Fund has "offices in New York City and Washington, D.C." and its headquarters is Harkness House, "a landmark building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side", at 1 East 75th Street. Its careers page says "As of July 2022, the Commonwealth Fund has a hybrid work policy that allows staff the flexibility to work from home", and lists a "Flexible hybrid work policy, with staff eligible to work remotely up to three days per week". On 2026-10-17 it had two openings, both published as PDFs: a Program Officer for its Achieving Equitable Outcomes program ("hybrid and based in our NYC location", $117,836.00 - $147,295.00) and a part-time Medicare internship in Washington, DC ("may be remote", 15-20 hours per week at $28 per hour).
What is the Commonwealth Fund team like?
Its careers page says "We look for talented people with curious minds who are inspired by the Fund’s mission" and that "we encourage all our staff to contribute to this work, regardless of title or tenure". It also says "while we take our work seriously, we also like to spend time getting to know one another on a personal and social level". The pages do not state a headcount.
Work-Life Balance
The benefits list on the careers page names "Half-day summer Fridays" and "Generous time off to support employee work–life balance", next to the hybrid policy of up to three remote days a week. It does not say in which months the half days run, how many days of time off count as generous, or whether the Fridays apply to every role, and neither of the two opening PDFs repeats the benefit, so the careers page is the only source for it. It also lists "Comprehensive parental leave policies, with up to 12 weeks’ salary continuance".
Perks and Benefits
The careers page lists a "Best-in-class health care plan" provided "at no cost to employees and their dependents" with a health reimbursement account, a "403(b) retirement plan featuring generous employer contributions that range from 11 percent to 20 percent of annual salary", retiree health benefits, tuition reimbursement and professional development support, a "Generous matching gifts program for charitable donations", disability and life insurance coverage at no cost, and employee assistance and referral programs.
